Interview with Cariba Heine for Sleeping Beauty Platinum Edition

Was Sleeping Beauty a favourite of yours as a child?

Cariba Heine: Definitely! I can't tell you how many times I would've watched it growing up – my poor old VHS wasn't coping too well by the end!

What are the key underlying values found in Walt Disney classics, especially Sleeping Beauty?

Cariba Heine: I think the key values found in all Disney classics are kindness and generosity to those around you and doing what's right.

How does Sleeping Beauty show children the importance of inner-beauty and kindness?

Cariba Heine: Sleeping Beauty Platinum Edition includes some wonderful characters including Princess Aurora, Prince Phillip and the three good fairies which all possess those Disney values. A perfect example of this is when Prince Phillip meets Briar Rose (Princess Aurora) in the forest and falls in love with her although he has been told he must a marry nobility. He falls in love with her inner-beauty. Plus she can dance and sing!

How are these values important to young children and tweens today?

Cariba Heine: I think they're extremely important because sometimes our society adopts certain role models who actually don't demonstrate any good values at all. The 'old school' role models, you might say, such as Princess Aurora and the Disney princesses are relevant today more than ever.

Have you always been true to yourself?

Cariba Heine: Growing up is really hard and especially in those crucial years during high school – I think everybody does things they're not especially proud of. But it's all part of growing up. Everyone make mistakes but with good role models, we have someone to aspire to and to be inspired by.

How is kindness shown in all Disney Princesses?

Cariba Heine: Well it's shown in their actions. They're kind to everything around them, regardless of whether they might be an animal or a person.

Are all girls princesses underneath?

Cariba Heine: Absolutely! I think it's in our genetic makeup!

How important do you think Disney was to your life?

Cariba Heine: Disney was massive in my life. I've seen them all. And I'm so glad they were so available when I was young. Disney movies account for a lot of my childhood! It’s great to see the classics like Sleeping Beauty Platinum Edition coming out of the Disney Vault more beautiful than ever with remastered sound and vision.

Do you agree that Walt Disney DVDs are for all ages?

Cariba Heine: Definitely. The animation to this day is still amazing, let alone the music scores and stories themselves.

What are your other favourite Walt Disney movies?

Cariba Heine: Oh, too many! I have a lot of Mickey Mouse themed clothes and jewellery, I love Mickey Mouse, I think Bambi would still make me cry, I still quote lines from Aristocats, Beauty and The Beast! Aladdin! There's just too many to choose from.

How does that movie provide a good role model for teenagers?

Cariba Heine: Well all of those movies have their heroes and heroines who always display those classic Disney values. They're in every Disney movie.
