From comedy and crime to psychological thrillers, SBS On Demand will be bringing Australian audiences a selection of distinct dramas from all over the world this December. With seventeen new series and seven new collections dropping across the month, viewers will be spoilt for choice.
Starring Russell Tovey (Years and Years), Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones) and Nina Toussaint-White (Bodyguard), British psychological thriller The Sisterdrops on SBS On Demand weekly from Wednesday 2 December. From Neil Cross, the creator of Luther, comes another enthralling drama series, praised by The Guardian as a "nail-biting whodunnit that is truly haunting." Almost a decade into his new devoted married life, Nathan is rocked to the core when an unwelcome face from the past turns up on his doorstep with shocking news, triggering a series of catastrophic decisions. The Sister will also air on SBS weekly from 9.30pm Wednesday 2 December.
British hit drama series Adult Material (see trailer below) will be available from Tuesday 1 December. Starring Hayley Squires (Collateral) and Rupert Everett (My Best Friend's Wedding), Adult Material examines the porn industry from the perspective of leading British porn star and mother of three, Jolene. One day on set, Jolene meets 19-year-old Amy – an encounter which leads to the unravelling of Jolene's career, reputation and personal life. Adult Material will also air on SBS VICELAND weekly from 9.30pm Tuesday 1 December.
Aquarius will drop on Thursday 3 December. Starring David Duchovny as an LAPD detective, Aquarius is a gritty 1960s crime drama revolving around the Charles Manson murders. Thriller drama series Low Winter Sunand The Ministerwill be available from Thursday 10 December. A contemporary story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption in a world where the line between cops and criminals is blurred, Low Winter Sun stars Mark Strong (Temple, Deep State) and begins with the murder of a cop by a fellow Detroit detective. Starring Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Trapped), Icelandic political drama The Minister follows the newly elected Prime Minister of Iceland, who starts losing his grip on reality and the effect that has on his family and the Icelandic nation.
Canadian thriller Departure premieresFriday 11 December. The six-part event series follows the disappearance of Flight 716, a passenger plane that vanishes over the Atlantic Ocean. Investigator Kendra Malley is brought in by her mentor Howard Lawson to lead the team looking into the crash. With the whole world watching, Kendra and her team must race to find the missing aircraft and rescue possible survivors.
Season one of Scandi-noir series The Investigation and the first two seasons of sports drama Home Ground will drop Thursday 17 December. Based on a true story, The Investigation explores the gripping case of murdered young Swedish journalist Kim Wall. The series covers the six-month investigation into how and why Wall was murdered on a submarine where she was interviewing the eccentric inventor who built it. In Norwegian drama Home Ground, a newly promoted football club loses its coach just before the start of the league season. A woman, Helena Mikkelsen, gets the historic chance to coach the team, even before an ambitious player who was promised the job.
With sixty episodes dropping on Thursday 31 December, Martial Universeis a Chinese fantasy series for fans of Game of Thrones. Lin Dong is forsaken by his clan. When he comes across a stone talisman with magical powers, life will never be the same again. His adventures help him hone his skills as a martial artist, to keep a demon sect from taking over the world.
