Westernalia has always had a place in pop-culture, however it's entered a whole new market with the modern spin on the cactus. The photographic and stylish plant has climbed to the heights of Intsa-fame, and made its mark in the fashion world.
No stranger to a runway, the cactus has featured in Kenzo collections, been a staple for Gorman and is also at the core of streetwear label Cactus Plant Flea Market, as worn by Pharrell, Frank Ocean and Big Sean.
This summer it's international presence has been unwavering, and with the world-famous music festival Coachella Valley coming up, of which the cactus is a symbol of, the hype is set to grow. To honour the plant, Melbourne Central will get prickly with a pop-up Cactus Carnival this April. Hosting a cactus-inspired collective of Melbourne brands and pop-up retailers, shoppers will be able to fully immerse themselves in all things cacti. With Levi's offering cactus-themed customisation, Francesca selling cactus charms and many more fashion finds. Headlining the event will be Cactus Country, who are set to line the walls with everyone's favourite succulents, as they introduce a cactus garden installation that will be Melbourne's latest hot spot Instagram pics; perhaps to ease the FOMO of not being at Coachella that weekend.
