Being a teenager in modern society can be challenging and many girls will at some time struggle with issues related to peer pressure, relationships, family and school expectations, body image and media stereotyping, social labelling, bullying and self-esteem.
It can also be a difficult time for parents, educators and other adults involved with helping teenage girls to become more resilient and positive so they can evolve into confident and secure young women.
A 'Girls' Empowerment' holiday program that helps teenage girls deal with the emotional and physical 'stuff' going on in their lives will take place at the Lake Burrendong Centre, near Orange from 14th-18th of January 2013.
Developed by Office of Communities - Sport and Recreation, the Girls' Empowerment Program is one of the latest editions to the popular kids' holiday programs. As a 'girls only' space, this five day camp will offer a mix of fun, physical activities with sessions that aim to boost the wellbeing and confidence of teenage girls aged 13-16 years.
Participants will explore a number of related topics that impact on teenagers today including self-awareness and self- worth, mixed media and social messages about having a 'perfect' body or behaving in a certain way; the influence of stereotypes; personal safety; and having healthy friendships.
The programs are designed to help girls to challenge themselves and challenge the way they think about mixed social messages and reconnecting with the core values and self-belief that may have become lost in adolescence.
Some other fun outdoor sessions will include activities such as archery, rock climbing, challenge ropes and the flying fox.
