Whether they are defying cultural norms, or getting married in incredibly flamboyant frocks, the gypsy culture continues to fascinate and ignite debate worldwide. Style's new eight-part series, 'A Gypsy Life For Me", goes behind the headlines and introduces viewers to key figures in the often controversial travelling community.
The series centres on gypsy journalist Jake Bowers, passionate spirit Tracey Nidic, and a carefully selected team of judges who are on a mission to improve their community's image in a national talent show, 'Traveller's Got Talent". This quest will take the team to interesting locations across the United Kingdom including Dale Farm, the Epsom Derby and the Lee Gap Horse Fair in Yorkshire. The series will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at 'Traveller's Got Talent" while showcasing the community's rich history and of course, the talents of their brightest stars. Meet the Cast
Jake Bowers
As editor of The Traveller's Times, Jake is one of the few gypsy journalists. He has an impressive CV having worked at the BBC, The Guardian and as a radio presenter. Jake's line of work also means he is well aware of the media and public's view of the travelling community. This married father of three is keen to celebrate the gypsy culture by promoting Traveller's Got Talent and finding a superstar performer.
Tracey Nedic
Scottish gypsy Tracey represents the modern travelling woman, with interests that extend far beyond cooking and cleaning. A self-confessed karaoke addict, Tracey also indulges in regular shopping trips and beauty treatments. Together with Jake, this passionate traveller is co-promoting the competition this year and is keen to celebrate her beloved people.
Jentina Chapman
After achieving fame with three hit pop singles and lucrative modeling contracts, 25-year-old Jentina's life certainly went in a different direction to most of her traveler friends and family. Despite her success, Jentina is still very proud of her roots and a vibrant part of the travelling community. She is serving as a judge and a mentor of in the talent show and has vowed to help the contestants shine on stage.
Roisin Mullins
Born in West Sussex, 28-year-old Roisin comes from a mixed background of Irish and English Roma gypsies. She is also one of the world's leading Irish dancers and choreographers having worked with the great Michael Flatley in the hugely successful dance show 'Lord of the Dance". Nowadays, Roisin runs her own successful Irish Dance stage show 'Raven Dance" making her the dream judge in 'Traveller's Got Talent".
Sam Lee
At only 30-years-old, Sam is a gifted singer and an award winning pioneer on the contemporary folk scene. As the first folk singer to teach at the Royal College of Music, Sam is a natural and extremely charismatic judge and mentor to the Traveller's Got Talent finalists.
Damian Le Bas
A multi-talented champion of gypsy culture, Damian is an academic, a published author, artist and journalist. Born to a large gypsy family in Sussex, he studied Theology at Oxford University and works at the Travellers' Times Online and with the Romany Theatre Company. Acting as a judge for Travellers' Got Talent, Damian is determined to give gypsy culture the profile it deserves.
