A Little Night Music is one of Stephen Sondheim's most sophisticated creations. Inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, the setting is Sweden in midsummer, on the edge of the Arctic Circle, the land of the midnight sun. Sondheim's score is almost entirely written in triple time - the rhythm of the waltz - which gives it a quaint and lyrical air which contrasts violently with the punchy style of, say, Sweeney Todd or Company. To conduct it is Australian musical theatre expert, Andrew Greene.
