Let's Get Lost M

Renowned photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber weaves together in glorious black and white the tragic rise and fall of jazz idol Chet Baker, once described as a cross between James Dean and Jack Kerouac. The documentary traces Baker's story from his rise in the jazz world as a celebrated trumpeter and singer playing with the likes of Charlie Parker, to his tragic decline in the 1980s which saw the fading of his matinee idol looks, his struggle to book gigs and his battle with heroin addiction.

Sun Ra: Space is the Place M
John Coney, 85 mins, USA, 1974, 35mm. Source/Courtesy: Jim Newman
Space age prophet, jester, shaman-philosopher and avant-jazz keyboardist Sun Ra lands his spaceship in Oakland and disembarks on a musical odyssey that takes in black power, inner-city rap sessions and a world concert to blow your mind. Originally released in a truncated version due to cuts requested by Sun Ra (apparently due to prudishness over the more salacious elements of the plot), Space is the Place was re-released in 2003 with the reinstated scenes, cementing the film's cult reputation as the trippiest sci-fi-meets-blaxploitation film ever!

Sounds Like Teen Spirit: A Popumentary unclassified 15+

A super-sequined spawn of its over-the-top-pop spectacular parent, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest is just as heady and extravagant, yet has a wildly more endearing display of driven young talent. This documentary follows a handful of creative teens vying for junior Eurovision stardom who must write and perform their own songs and wow millions of voting viewers in a live telecast. The fame and ecstasy of representing their countries - from Cyprus to Serbia - compel the kids to produce mind-boggling showstoppers of gaudy costumes and choreography as the film lays bare the hard-won joys of victory and unavoidable agonies of defeat. Australian premiere!
