Interview with Amy Guess

Question: What inspired the track, Lay Low?

Amy Guess: I had a couple tough relationship blows and along with normal life stresses I was feeling sad and down and overwhelmed. Writing this was giving myself a reminder and permission that it was okay and human to be feeling all those things and that it was okay to back away from it all and take the time necessary to just feel better. Not to be productive or accomplish this or that, but just feel better. Life will still be there when you get back.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Amy Guess: Whatever I'm experiencing in life currently is a big motivator. Love, trials, happiness, resilience, strength, sadness, frustration, and honesty. Working through feelings to a melody is always good medicine.

Question: When have you stepped away for the sake of your own mental health?

Amy Guess: I've done this when relationships have become strained and toxic, caught in a loop of bad energy, I've learned to recognise what is unhealthy and allow distance when it is. It's about knowing what is right for your soul and gravitating towards that and sending off that which isn't with love.

Question: What message do you hope the song spreads to audiences?

Amy Guess: I hope it reminds people to listen to themselves, listen to your body and what it's telling you it needs. If you feel like you need to take a break from someone or something it's important to take that break.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Amy Guess: Performing live, it's special connecting with people in that way live and in person. I love people, I love to party, I love going to watch live music. I think it's the best most freeing place in the world.

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

Amy Guess: Any of the songs I get to jump around to. When the room is full of energy.

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Amy Guess: My parents and hub being in the crowd is always special. Them and Brad Pitt would be the ultimate combo.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Amy Guess: MUNA, Metric, Meg Myers, Cold War Kids, Sam Fender.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Amy Guess: My first live concert was the New Kids on the Block. I was pretty young, but I thought that was the best shit ever so that was prob an early on motivator. When I started writing songs, that was the thing that made me want to go all in and really pursue it, the part I wanted to get to do forever.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Amy Guess: SIA. She's amazing, I've always been inspired by her.
