Nearly half (46%) of Australian shoppers are not yet taking advantage of price matching in-store according to comparison shopping site, Getprice, and missing out on the opportunity to save money.
To help consumers Getprice source the best bargains in-store, Getprice has released its top five price-matching tips:
1. Do your research online before you buy so you know the price range you should be aiming for in-store.
2. Price is only one ingredient of value Make sure that the product is the right one for your needs and that the retailer you're interested in purchasing from offers the right level of service. Do they have the product in stock, when can they deliver it, what is their return policy?
3. Take your mobile phone with you Your mobile is the best tool you have to check product specification in store and compare prices. Getprice has a very handy mobile app to do just that.
4. If you're price matching make sure it's like for like The model should be the same and be sure that there are no hidden shipping costs or other fees.
5. If a retailer won't/can't match your price, weigh up what's important to you before deciding whether to buy the product from them If you're not willing to wait, want the option to easily return the product, or are just tired of shopping around it's probably better to pay a few dollars more.
Director of product and marketing at Getprice, David Whiteman said that at a time when mobile shopping is fast growing, consumers should capitalise on price-matching to get best savings in-store.
'Some stores may refuse to price match with an internet retailer, but in general, retailers will drop the price of the product when a consumer asks for a discount. You just have to know how to approach the negotiation in-store.
'The internet has made pricing completely transparent. Your smart phone is the best tool you have to research prices to know you are getting the best deal on a product. Getprice has a mobile site and iPhone app that helps consumers compare prices easily.
'Doing your research before is essential when requesting a price-match. The retailer will have 20 reasons why their product is better than the one you're showing them so you have to ensure that when comparing products, it is like-for-like."
Mr Whiteman also provides his advice on the products that retailers would most likely drop prices for.
'Consumers are most likely to have their price matched on electronics and whitegoods products, particularly at big retailers like Harvey Norman, Dick Smith or The Good Guys. Stores usually have signs up if they are willing to price-match so always look out for the signs."
