Sydney's B-Boy Lowe has taken home the crown overnight at the Red Bull BC One 2017 Australian Cypher, cementing his place as Australia's best breakdancer in the international series.

In front of a packed out audience of judges, dancers and fans at the Ultimo Community Centre, Sydney, B-Boy Lowe prevailed against the nation's best break dancers in a one-on-one knockout battle format.

Lowe, an anime and sport lover who has been breaking for seventeen years, brought the house down with his unique individual style and classic breaking moves such as the toprock and downrock. He now shifts his attention in preparing to represent Australia at the Red Bull BC One World Finals on 4th November in Amsterdam.

Speaking after his win, Lowe, said he was happy to come out on top and meet everyone's expectations.

'I trained quite well and hard in the lead up to this event. My body was feeling fit, strong and awesome, and I'm glad I could deliver on the day.

'A big shout to the SKB krew for all their support and I'm now really looking forward to putting in some work ahead of the finals."

Born on the streets of New York City over 40 years ago, breaking is an urban art-form that unites communities all over the globe. One of the four pillars of Hip Hop culture (along with DJing, MCing and Graffiti Art), over the years B-Boying has grown into a rich and vibrant scene, with active communities stretching across every corner of the globe. Each year, top dancers and crews continue to push the limits of breaking, evolving it into an art form unlike any other - but only the best will progress through the stages of Sydney to Seoul to Rome  for the Red Bull BC One World Final.

Red Bull BC One was created in 2004 in Biel, Switzerland to find the world's best B-Boy. The competition has since traveled to Berlin, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Paris, New York City, Tokyo, Moscow and Rio de Janeiro.  Red Bull BC One operates with a series of over 90 cyphers throughout the world, leading to six exciting final rounds and climaxing in the big one - the World Final.

Interview with B-Boy Lowe Napalan

Question: When did you first know you wanted to become a B-Boy?

Lowe Napalan: My brother Don started teaching me how to break when I was 8 years old and I just did whatever he told me really. As I grew older and smarter it just became a part of my life and now I can't imagine what it would be like not breaking.

Question: Describe your style. What's your signature move?

Lowe Napalan: According to my crew mates and friends, my style is strong, detailed and has a bit of everything in it which flows well.

I have a few signature moves but my current favourites are my point freeze and walking ninja.

Question: How did you get your B-Boy name?

Lowe Napalan: My original B-Boy name was Lil Rock which was given to me by my brother and crew mates after making up a bunch of random ones. Stuck with that for a few years until we discovered another B-Boy from the US also called Lil Rock. Then I just started using my name after that as I didn't want to have the same nickname.

Question: Can you describe the local Hip Hop/B-Boy scene in your country?

Lowe Napalan: Our scene is growing steadily at the moment and we are starting to get out more internationally as our isolation from the rest of the B-Boy world cost us quite a bit of cash.

Question: Who, or what, are your inspirations?

Lowe Napalan: My family, friends and trying to reach my full potential in breaking; my brother Don has always been the biggest inspiration to me and in my eyes he is still the best B-Boy.

Question: Have you overcome any obstacles in breaking?

Lowe Napalan: Not really. Just the usually slumps you hit during your breaking career in which I gradually overcome to level up.

Question: How does breaking improve your life?

Lowe Napalan: It's the one thing that no one can take away from me and allows me to express all my emotions through breaking. It is also my way of connecting with people and sharing knowledge and experiences through breaking.

Question: What do you do beyond the dance?

Lowe Napalan: Breaking is no.1 for me. Other than that, I love sharing knowledge and teaching the next generations and generally helping people in any kind of way.

Question: What's the secret to your success?

Lowe Napalan: Definitely being consistent and not giving up. People think I am naturally talented because I can learn and pick up moves quite easily, but that is only because I did hours of practice with the fundamentals which make it easier to acquire new skills.

Question: What are your plans for the future? Goals you want to reach?

Lowe Napalan: One of my goals is actually to win the BC One belt. But my main goals are to travel to learn and meet B-Boys around the world as well as guiding Australia's next generation to be a force to be reckoned with.
