Synopsis: Everyone in the Portokalos family worries about Toula. Still unmarried at 30, she has nearly given up on romance and works at Dancing Zorba's, the Greek restaurant owned by her parents, Gus and Maria.
Vowing that she'd rather stab herself in the eye with a red-hot poker than work in the restaurant for the rest of her life, Toula is ready for a change. Unfortunately, the rest of her family is not.
After some persuasion from Maria, Toula's father agrees to help her embark upon a course of self-improvement, and pretty soon she's taking classes at a local college, getting a makeover, and working in her aunt's travel agency. It's then she meets Ian.
Ian is well appointed, tall, handsome and definitely not Greek. The two fall madly in love, but Toula fears her strong family heritage will undermine their relationship. Ian is convinced that's nonsense and bravely contends with Toula's boisterous family, while they in turn meet Ian's "whitebread" parents.
When Ian asks Toula to marry him, family takes on a whole new meaning. To pull this off, Toula knows if she can help Ian pass muster with her crazy relatives by getting him baptised in a Greek Orthodox Church, then their big fat Greek wedding will be a day to remember -- and she may have a shot at lasting happiness.
