US television network, ABC, today announced the first celebrity dancer to join the US Dancing with the Stars season 21 cast; our very own Bindi Irwin!
Fresh from wrangling crocs on Australia Zoo's annual crocodile research trip in Far North Queensland, Bindi has now arrived in the USA to a dramatic change of scenery. With filming due to commence soon, Bindi is gearing up to trade jumping crocs - a task almost second nature - for spinning, jumping and twirling at the hand of a professional dance partner.
Although she'll always remain a passionate and enthusiastic conservationist, Bindi's career as an entertainer has taken off in recent years. Her popularity both here in Australia and in the US has continued to grow thanks to lead-roles in movies such as Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove and her latest cinema release, Return to Nim's Island. The launch of two new television shows and a singing career have also contributed to her international success; however dancing is something completely new to add into the mix.
Bindi is thrilled to take part in the popular TV show and is excited for the new adventure it will bring, however she admits the nerves are starting to kick in.
'This is completely different to anything I have ever done in my life. I'm used to wrangling crocodiles, not dressing up in sparkly dresses and heels and performing in front of millions of viewers," said Bindi.
'I'm quite nervous, I just hope my dance partner, whoever it is, is very patient and likes animals, because you never know what I'm going to bring to rehearsal," she added.
Whether it's the Jive, Tango, Paso Doble, Rumba or Waltz, Bindi is looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead.
"It's all about having the courage and strength and for me, it is something completely different but I hope that I am able to inspire others in their own lives to seize opportunity and to make a difference and just jump, take that leap, even if it terrifies you," she said.
Bindi will take to the highly acclaimed stage for the premier on Monday September 14 8|7c on ABC. But before all the live action begins, it's time to get stuck into rehearsals!
