Interview with Dear Matilda
Question: How would you describe your music?
Dear Matilda: I would describe my music as raw singer songwriter/acoustic folk/pop/rock.
Question: Can you tell us about "on My Mind, What inspired On My Mind?
Dear Matilda: On My Mind is a tale about unrequited love. I wrote it about my first ever long distance romance. I had the most amazing time with a guy overseas in Europe and then coming home I felt heartbroken, even though the love was fleeting and unlikely to last long term. I was so excited and desperate to make it work. The relationship itself never worked out but I got a few songs out of it at least.
Question: Is there a particular message you hope listeners take from your music?
Dear Matilda: A range of different things, perspective, compassion, realness; I have been through a lot of mental health issues in my life already and i hope it has taught me to be more compassionate without meaning to sound too clichéd.
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Dear Matilda: I love both very much; I'd have to say over all, with the adrenaline, I prefer performing live and connecting with an audience. No matter how many times I do it I still get really nervous for some reason I keep doing it, I love it by the end of the performance.
Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?
Dear Matilda: At the moment it's Can't Stay Away because lyrically it's real and raw, but also upbeat and optimistic, a combination of both of my personalities. You can actually hear it on my Spotify.
Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?
Dear Matilda: Dave Groll, from The Foo Fighters, he's definitely one of my biggest inspirations. He's been in the music and rock industry for so many years now and obviously been through so much, with losing Kurt in Nirvana and I think for him to come back after that and continue to make music and share that with people and uplift people wherever possible, it's amazing!
Question: What motivates you most when writing music?
Dear Matilda: Life experience, break ups, young romance, hardships, anxiety and all the fun things.
Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
Dear Matilda: Oh my goodness, where to start? I love listening to and supporting as much local music as I can, particularly in these hard times. Reilly Stapleton, Velvet Bloom and Yara are some of my favourite independent female musos/producers who are making really strong and meaningful music right now.
I also love the work that Billie Eilish and Finneus are doing. I feel very lucky to be part of the generation that watches them grow up and develop as even better producers than they already are (without sounding weird).
I also love diving into older records such as Fleetwood Mac, Queen and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I think as an artist there is potential to learn from all creative if you open your mind to it and that's a really exciting thing!
Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Dear Matilda: So many things throughout my life already; I get inspired by all of the amazing creatives that are all around the world every single day and I'm glad that we have the internet to connect us all.
One of my earliest memories was actually begging my mum for a guitar when I was 10 years old, because I wanted to be like Avril Lavigne.
Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
Dear Matilda: Such a big question, Tash Sultana, I'd like to pick her brain. She's another example of someone that's come from tough times and managed to turn her life around, her story is so inspiring and makes me want to never stop learning and creating.
Question: What's a typical day like?
Dear Matilda: Things aren't typical right now, but usually University, and work and trying to fit as much music in-between. At the moment I am having a lot more time to think, write and create, which can be scary and also very exciting, and I want to make the most of that opportunity right now.
Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
Dear Matilda: All the lovely people i have got to meet and friends I have made, I have recently got back into collaborating with people, which is awesome, it gets me out of my own head and allows me to make better music overall I hope.
Question: What's next, for you?
Dear Matilda: A lot of things actually, I've got another track coming out in May, more details coming soon, doing some Facebook live gigs, on Friday nights at 8.00pm, working more on my mixing and production skills. I am slowly trying to develop my home studio. I am actually on the lookout for more projects to develop my mixing skills, if you know anyone interested, I'd love to hear from them.
