Demalogica Daylight Defense System
Dermalogica's ongoing leadership in the sun protection category of skin care continues with the brand's announcement of new formulations and upgrades. The result: new Oleosome Technology combines with UV Smart Booster Technology to make UV protection products more effective, longer lasting, and more comfortable for the wearer.
"Our brand has always been about education, first and foremost," comments Annet King, Director of Global Education for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. "We feel that it is the mission of skin care professionals to provide accurate, reliable information to consumers about protecting their skin from the risks of UV, which include skin cancer. That's why we created our Daylight Defense products for sun protection, which we tell our customers they need to use 365 days a year, not just when they are at the beach or spending time outdoors. It's also why we created micro-encapsulation technology, which is photo-activated, or triggered by exposure to sunlight. Even sitting in your car in direct sun, day after day, year after year, can result in hyperpigmentation and other signs of visible aging to the face, neck and hands, introducing the risk of skin cancer through constant exposure."
To ensure the highest level of protection and maintain the elegant skin care feel of its sun protection formulas, Dermalogica uses two sophisticated technologies to boost product performance;
UV Smart Booster Technology
The sun has powerful effects on the skin, eyes and the body in general. Sometimes a sunscreen is not enough to battle the damaging effects of UV radiation. Research has shown that UV rays cause skin reddening, DNA damage, and also trigger formation of free radicals, which wreak havoc on cellular material. Free radicals, also known as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are unstable molecules capable of altering DNA, enzyme function and other critical processes. Free radical formation in skin, along with the damaging effects of UV rays, ultimately results in sun-induced skin changes such as pigmentation, wrinkling, actinic keratosis, and even skin cancer.
For enhanced photoprotection against harmful UV rays and free radicals, we have incorporated antioxidants into formulas via our revolutionary UV Smart Booster Technology. We have encapsulated essential antioxidants vitamins C and E into a microcapsule that activates only when needed. In this case, these vitamins are release when exposed to UV rays, delivering enhanced photoprotection when it is needed most.
Oleosome Technology
Dermalogica's consistent recommendation remains one of daily, day-time UV protection, and now introduces Oleosome Technology in new Oil Free Matte SPF30 - to encourage greater ease of daily use. Oleosomes are naturally-occurring spheres of emollient oils and Vitamin E found in Safflower Seeds. These unique molecules can deliver active ingredients such as sunscreens, directly to the skin surface, and release them over time to ensure the maximum skin benefits.
These qualities are especially relevant when formulating with chemical sunscreens because they allow for a higher SPF rating while using fewer sunscreen agents, lessening the chance of sensitivity and providing an elegant feel and wearability.
Dermalogica's new Oil Free Matte SPF30, with Oleosome Technology, can deliver much more UV protection without unwanted oiliness or chalkiness while improving customer satisfaction.
For an easier prescription by skin care professionals for consumers, four Dermalogica reformulated products have been transitioned from the Daily Defense System, packaged in solar orange, to the Dermalogica categories which are more appropriate to their usage. Newly upgraded Oil Free Matte SPF30, with an upgrade from SPF20, is now packaged as part of the mediBac clearing® system (lime-green packaging), since this product is specifically formulated to control the four main factors which contribute to adult acne. Similarly, Ultra Sensitive Tint SPF30 and Super Sensitive Shield SPF30 are now packaged as part of the UltraCalming™ system (purple packaging), which contain the UltraCalming™ Complex to help reduce sensitivity, redness, irritation and inflammation.
King comments, "Dermalogica is excited to once again break new ground with advances in UV protection and skin health discoveries. Statistics show that the incidence of skin cancer is on the rise, and is not declining, in spite of many decades of aggressive public information campaigns about the risks of sun exposure. In response, our brand has taken the initiative to develop products which address this risk more accurately and effectively, and which consumers will want to use daily."

Dermalogica revolutionised the skin care industry when it emerged into the marketplace in 1986 with innovative formulations, which excluded common irritants, including SD alcohol, lanolin, mineral oil and artificial colors and fragrances. Jane Wurwand developed the products to better support the advanced curriculum she had developed a few years earlier for The International Dermal Institute, which she also founded. Wurwand led the company's growth from an idea to the world's most-requested professional skin care brand.
