Although eczema can affect people of all ages, it usually appears in early childhood (in babies between two-to-six months of age) and disappears around six years of age. The Eczema Association of Australasia Inc. recommends the following to help prevent and manage an eczema breakout:
Keep the skin moist by using a daily moisturiser, preferably within minutes of exiting a bath or shower to help 'lock' in the moisture.
Wear 100% cotton or soft fabrics - avoiding rough, scratchy fibres and tight clothing.
Don't rub but softly pat the skin with a soft non-abrasive towel.
Avoiding activities that raise a sweat or that rapidly change body temperature.
Remove carpets and keep pets outside.
Ventilate the house as often as possible.
Avoid stuffed toys which harbor dust mites.
Change bed linen regularly, using specialized dust mite prevention covers.
