Julian Burnside is a barrister with fans far and wide . He is famed for his staunch opposition to the mandatory detention of asylum seekers. Burnside is a human rights and refugee advocate, author and amateur philogist. He was elected as Living National Treasure in 2004, and in 2009 he received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service as a human rights advocate, and for his services to the arts and the law.
