Interview with Shockone
"Calm continueth not long without a storm."
As the much hyped lead single to Shockone's forthcoming debut album 'Crucify Me Parts I & II', hit the airwaves this june, it picked up high rotation on triple J, and over 500,000 plays on youtube in a matter of weeks, earning Shockone aka Karl Thomas buzz as one of the major talents in bass music worldwide today.
Hailing from Perth the epicenter of the Australasian drum and bass scene, 2009 saw Shockone come of age with the release of 'The Shockone EP', featuring the seminal 'Polygon'. This tune received major air play world wide on Australia's Triple J radio and Radio 1's Annie Mac penning it as 'The biggest drum and bass tune out'. The EP's three drum and bass tunes achieved the top 3 spots on beatports drum and bass chart, and 'Adachigahara's Theme' stayed at number 1 on the dubstep chart for over a month, subsequently being voted as beatports number 1 all time classic dubstep tune. Following this Shockone released his remix of the Brookes Brothers epic 'Crackdown' on Viper recordings 'Acts of madmen LP' which was labeled "Album of the Week" on Zane Lowe BBC Radio 1. Shockone's collaborations with Phetsta, 'The Sun 2009' and 'Cyclones' have also received high rotation on radio worldwide.
If 2009 was the year of establishing himself, 2010 could best be described as the year of the remix for Shockone. His remix discography reading like a who's who of drum and bass and electronic music in general; The Aston Shuffle - Strart Again, Brookes brothers - Crackdown, Netsky- I refuse, Bcee - Help you, Chicane - Come back, Cutline - Die for you, Mutya Buena & Agent X - Fallin all receiving major DJ and radio support worldwide. 2010 also brought the release of the highly anticipated Shockone - 'Re-fix' EP, a collection of VIP's and remixes of the massively successful 'Shockone EP'.
On the touring front Shockone has just toured nationally as support for 'Karnivool' Australian tour, and is set to hit the road again in August & September to promote the forthcoming 'Dubstep Invasion' compilation due out imminently through onelove recordings.
Shockone is no stranger to accolades! Having taken out 'best tune of the year' at the Perth dance music awards four years in a row, 'best drum and bass DJ' 3 years in a row and 'best producer' 3 years in a row, Shockone's heavily anticipated debut longplayer is set out for release early 2012. A second single from the album will drop this October. This long awaited solo album is set to push boundaries and cross genres in his usual style as it takes in influences across the board from house, d'n'b, and dubstep.
Question: Can you talk about the experience of mixing Dubstep Invasion Volume 2?
Shockone: I had a great time doing the mix. It's a really great opportunity to share all the tunes I've been feeling over the last six months. The mix I did is basically a summary of what I've been playing and the dubstep tunes I've been into over the last six months or so. I wanted to include a lot of the tunes people already know and love, but I hoped to also expose people to some new music they may not have heard yet. As well as the tracks them selves I've tried to put it all together in a way that the mix itself is something greater than the sum of its parts. The listener can skip to the songs they like, but I feel they will get more out of it upon listening from start to finish.
Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?
Shockone: I listen to a lot of experimental down tempo stuff. Ive been listening to TOKiMONSTA, Alex B, and James Blake a lot lately. And I always have the classics like Pink Floyd and the police on my player.
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Shockone: They're both great and totally different experiences. Recording is often really hard work and not as instantly gratifying as performance. However the making music is definitely my priority in life and the thing that is on my mind almost all day every day. Nothing compares to the excitement of creating something new and being in that creative mind set, but on the other hand the energy of live performance is amazing too. I guess you can sum it in saying that the creative process is quite an internal personal experience and performance is the counter opposite of that, external and immediate.
Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Shockone: My parents. I come from a very musical family so I was surrounded by music since birth. I was given a drum kit at age four and was performing on stage by age 11. I feel very lucky in life to have known at such a young age what my passion is and what I wanted to do with my life. The only other thing I ever considered doing in life was being a professional basketball player, but music won out.
Question: What is the story behind the name, Shockone?
Shockone: It actually comes from the Mobb deep tune 'Shook ones' a friend misheard me say it and thought I said Shockone, which I thought was even better.
Question: What difference is there between playing overseas compared to a set at home?
Shockone: There actually isn't a huge difference to be honest. Australian crowds in general are amazingly energetic and responsive. In some European places the crowds might not be so mental, but at the end of the day, it's my job to make them go mental. Some places you find have a slightly more educated crowd who respond a bit more to unreleased bits they might already know and have heard on the net or something.
Question: What has been your favourite part of your musical career, so far?
Shockone: Playing the Big day out this year for the first time was definitely a highlight for me. The Big day out was the first festival I went to as a kid so to be able to play at it was a bit of a dream come true. Also hearing Polygon on Triple J for the first time was a hugely exciting moment for me.
Question: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would you choose and why?
Shockone: It would be Either Pink Floyd, The Chemical Brothers or Daft Punk. These are all artists who inspired me to write electronic music in the first place to it would be a dream to work with any of them.
Question: What is your ultimate music goal?
Shockone: Ultimately, I just want to create and offer music to the world that hopefully makes people happy. I know how important music has been in my life and how much it affects me on a day to day basis. If I can do that for someone else I'll be very happy!
