Dulux Opens The Door To Colour

If your eyes are the window to your soul, your front door provides an insight to your home – and a simple way to improve its look and create a fresh new impression is by painting a coloured entry door.

Painting statement doors and accent trims is a hot trend in home design. Property owners are enhancing their spaces with a mix of sheens, colours and interesting designs.

The door is now seen as a room accessory – a blank canvas that can add some personality into the home through simple colour and design updates.

'Adding a splash of colour can make a surprising difference, instantly transforming the space and adding value and appeal," says Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr.

'Most interiors and exteriors are neutral, which allows you to be as adventurous as you like! Home owners can be bold with colour to create a punch of personality or a sense of calm, depending on the colour selected."

'But it's not just about colour. You can also play with designs and sheen levels to create  maximum impact. Geometric patterns on doors is right on trend," Andrea says.

Dulux Aquanamel is the ideal paint for transforming the doors in your home.

Available in gloss and semi gloss, the durable water-based enamel has been created for use on interior and exterior doors, windows and trims. Unlike oil based enamels, Aquanamel won't yellow over time, and is also great for architraves and skirting boards. It is low odour, quick to
apply and washes up in water instead of mineral turps.

And because it is quick to dry, you can add a second coat two hours after the first, which means you can complete your project faster.

'Painting your doors can give your home a whole new look without a huge investment in time and money," Ms Lucena-Orr says.

'It's an easy to paint, low-risk project to accessorise and complement any façade, room or furnishings."

Design & colour tips:

While you may want to want to consider the palettes of your neighbours' homes as well as your own, most exteriors are neutral so this lets you be creative with colour.

Step by step guide to painting doors:

Ensure a clean and smooth surface.

Fill nail holes and cracks with a suitable filler.

Remove or tape the doorknob. Removing the door from its hinges is optional.

For best results and maximum adhesion, sand gloss and semi gloss finishes thoroughly and
dust off before painting*.

Apply 2 coats of Dulux Aquanamel allowing a minimum of 2 hours to dry between coats.

Once all coats are completely dry, replace the doorknob and screw door back into place.

* A prepcoat is recommended for unpainted doors as well as over aged enamels, clear finishes, or other previously painted doors that are repaired, patchy or are of an uneven gloss level. It is also recommended when painting over darker colours. Apply 1 coat of Dulux 1 Step Acrylic Primer, Sealer and Undercoat before applying Dulux Aquanamel.

Tips:

Use a brush over a roller as you will have greater control with intricate details.

Remember to paint the top and bottom edges of the door to protect against rot and swelling.

Removing the door from its hinges will achieve the best results but is not essential.
