Interview with Elle Wilson
Question: What originally inspired your love of eyebrow artistry?
Elle Wilson: I had worked as a beauty therapist for almost 16 years and I worked on my clients brows just like any other beauty professional. I used text book guidelines and did my best, using the very little I had been taught. I never felt like I was really 'designing" my clients' brows, just tidying them. After all this is what beauty professionals are taught in college.
Still to this day the textbook guidelines rule in the beauty therapy curriculum around the world. Unfortunately, they create more devastation than we can imagine, as they are completely incorrect.
Fourteen years ago I was at a different stage in my life. I had spent a lot time reflecting on my life, meditating and seeking deeper meaning in all things. It was from this space that the original material, now known as the Brow Artists International training programs, emerged; true beauty being the key ingredient.
From the soft, creative flow within, I began creating, restoring and transforming woman's brows, much to my own amazement. I began to see the real power of a woman's brow. It had the power to transform her entire appearance. And most importantly it had nothing to do with the shape of her face or her facial features.
I would say that my inspiration was the deeper meaning I was finding within myself. A deeper meaning of what beauty really meant and where it came from.
Question: How has eyebrow shaping changed over the years?
Elle Wilson: Unfortunately, brows have been undervalued and mistreated for centuries.
Often considered a fashion statement, when in fact a woman's brow is a beauty statement and deserves to be treated as one of her most precious assets. it can and does literally transform her beauty.
Over many years we have seen brows used for many different reasons, even for status in some cultures. However, in more recent years, nothing has been more devastating than the brow that dominates and overshadows a woman's beauty.
Being a billion dollar industry, it has attracted many professionals or self-proclaimed brow -experts' who produce brows using their own version of beauty. This can often have disastrous effects.
Now we are moving toward real beauty and real design principles, carried out by Brow Artists who have comprehensive, ongoing training. The brow world has entered a new era where the woman's beauty is its ultimate purpose, designed and restored to its fullest potential, allowing the woman's beauty to truly shine forth.
Question: What is the current trend for eyebrows?
Elle Wilson: The current trend is definitely natural brows that have soft, flowing lines. Nothing overly severe and definitely not harsh. The strong, defined, blocky brows have thankfully had their time and woman are looking for a brow that is defined by subtlety.
A truly beautiful brow never overpowers the woman.
Question: Can we cause damage to our eyebrows by over plucking and waxing?
Elle Wilson: It's never really the plucking or the waxing that is the problem. It's WHO is plucking and waxing that we need to look at. Waxing is a wonderful hair removal technique. However, it isn't what we use primarily to design or restore brows. The subtle and finer work is always done with tweezers.
Threading is also an amazing hair removal technique. In fact, that's all it is, is a hair removal technique which many have incorrectly believed has something to do with design. We see so many brows that have been ravaged by threading, not because threading isn't a fabulous hair removal technique, but rather, because the threader themselves has no idea about design or natural brow restoration.
Anyone can damage brows if the person doing the plucking, waxing or threading has had no comprehensive design training. To train in brow design and natural brow restoration takes months, even years to perfect. It isn't a small undertaking to transform a woman's beauty. Yet, our artists often create miracles after training with us for just 2 or 3 months.
Question: How can we grow our eyebrows out to keep up with the current trends?
Elle Wilson: As I mentioned earlier, brows should always be seen as a beauty statement, never as a trend. Women set trends and when women find the perfectly skilled and trained brow artist, who knows how to perfect their brows, they will never change them, no matter what the fashion magazines suggest.
To really start the process of perfecting your brows and transforming your appearance the first thing you must do is find a skilled and highly trained brow artist. Ask them how long their training was, where did they train? Look at their before and after photos, ask questions; the right questions. Ask them to share their vision for your brows. It really isn't about growing out your brows. We all know how to do this. Just put down your tweezers. It's about finding the artist you can entrust your brows to.
Question: What is the BAI Ultimate Brow?
Elle Wilson: It's the brow you always dreamt of. It's timeless, soft, elegant, yet sophisticated, with defined lines that open up your face and transform you immediately. It has no harsh or over exaggerated lines. It doesn't scream at you, 'Look at me." It has an elegance and beauty so subtle it holds a type of mystery. It brings out the softness within a woman.
Question: Is it possible to manage our own eyebrows?
Elle Wilson: I would like to say yes, but in all honesty, it simply isn't. For those of us who have experienced the work of a true brow artist, we cannot deny the need for the essential brow design and maintenance services.
The amount of times I have had a client walk in and say, 'My brows aren't too bad at the moment," and following their maintenance service, they are aghast and cannot believe the difference. This only had to happen once or maybe twice and they were hooked. Maintaining brows too perfection is the work of an artist. You never want to compromise your brows.
Question: What are your tips for plucking our eyebrows, at home?
Elle Wilson: Don't. I know this may sound harsh, but this may be because you haven't seen what I have seen. Women who previously stamped their feet and were adamant that their brows just don't grow within three months of putting their tweezers down, are amazed after handing their brows over to one of our trained brow artists.
I cannot share enough how important brows are to your beauty and you must never compromise your beauty. A designer dress, shoes, or bag cannot compete with the BAI Ultimate Brow. Get your basic beauty right first and then everything else just works!
Eyebrows are the foundation of your beauty. They can make or break you.
Question: Who are your celebrity eyebrow crushes?
Elle Wilson: Super question. I am so in love with Sofia Vergara. She exudes woman-ness. One of the sections in our training programs is titled, 'When Nature Knows Best." A true brow artist knows when to step back and not take over. That is one of the most difficult parts of our training programs to learn. But when you do, it's amazing. Sofia is definitely in this category, nature has been so kind to her. Even though I would love to work on her brows and do a little tweaking here and there. I can't help but see how I can improve brows. It's an obsession. Lily Collins is another favourite of mine because her brows are soft and so is she. Love them.
I love Cara Delavinge's brows but I think that she needs some tweaking as well. However, how could you ever say anything about such beauty; she is a doll. But I would love to do her brows.
