Aged Garlic Extract™ may help to reverse the fatty deposits around the heart and reduce calcification in our arteries and lowers blood pressure, according to breakthrough research.

World renowned cardiologist, Dr Matthew Budoff will unveil international findings into the multiple benefits of Aged Garlic Extract™(AGE) at the Port Douglas Heart Meeting in June 2015.

Professor of Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre and the author of more than 700 papers and 6 books, Dr Budoff will highlight recently published results about the role of AGE in heart disease.

Coronary heart disease claimed the lives of 20,046 Australians in 2012 and kills one Australian every 26 minutes. Each year, around 55,000 Australians suffer a heart attack or one heart attack every 10 minutes.

Dr Budoff said the study is the first to look at the role of Aged Garlic Extract™ and its direct effect on heart arteries.

'We found AGE helps to reduce soft plaque within the arteries. Studies show that most heart attacks are caused by soft plaque which is an inflamed part of an artery that can burst. This can lead to the formation of a blood clot, which can lead to heart attack", Dr Budoff said.

'The double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study focused on middle-aged patients with metabolic syndrome.

'We measured the participants' total coronary plaque volume and the ratio of soft or hard deposits using Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA), a revolutionary non-invasive imaging technology that accurately measures calcium deposits and plaque build-up in the arteries.

'People who were given aged garlic extract showed a significant reduction in their soft plaques.

'The results are very promising. We believe that AGE helps to reduces plaque and blockages in the coronary arteries.

'We also found that AGE decreased diastolic blood pressure and slowed the progression of coronary artery calcification. This leads us to believe that garlic may prove useful for patients who are at high risk of future cardiovascular events.

"Our studies demonstrate the benefit of Aged Garlic Extract on both plaque changes over time and new plaque formation. We have completed four randomized studies to date and all have led us to concur that AGE is both beneficial for slowing atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and reversing the early stages of heart disease.

'Few therapies have ever been able to slow or stop atherosclerosis."

Several previous clinical studies have shown AGE may inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis, lower blood pressure, improve oxidative stress and enhance circulation.

Dr. Matthew Budoff is at the forefront of the medical community's efforts to develop early detection methods for cardiac disease, the number one cause of death in the U.S. Given that approximately 50 percent of U.S. heart disease victims learn of their illness by experiencing a sometimes fatal heart attack, Dr. Budoff has devoted much of his time over the past 20 years to advancing procedures that can help doctors identify cardiac patients early, and place them on a therapeutic path to prevent a heart attack.

Dr. Budoff works on at least 20 active medical research trials at any given time, and is a frequent lecturer on topics of cardiology at symposia, congresses and annual conferences on every continent. He has authored or co-authored over 600 research papers, six books, and 36 book chapters. In the past two years alone, Dr. Budoff has been honored with multiple awards recognizing his professional skills and accomplishments. Of particular note is his receipt of the Einstein Award for Scientific Achievement from the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, U.K.; his inclusion in five respected lists of top doctors in America; being named to the US News list of Top Doctors for 2011; and, most recently, named to 'World's Most Influential Scientific Minds" in 2014. In 2015, he was named the Endowed Chair of Preventive Cardiology at his institution.

Dr. Budoff graduated cum laude from the University of California, Riverside, with a major in biochemistry. He went on to graduate with distinction and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha from the George Washington University School of Medicine, in Washington, DC, before returning to his native California to complete an internship and residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in cardiology, at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, where he currently acts as Program Director for the Cardiology Fellowship and Director of Cardiac Computed Tomography.

Wagner Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ is a very different form of garlic supplements. Kyolic® is naturally aged garlic extract that provides all the powerful benefits of fresh garlic (plus a few more) without the garlic odour

This means:
active compounds in garlic are less volatile and more bioavailable

Question: Can you tell us about the health benefits of garlic?

Emma Sutherland: Garlic has been famous for its many health benefits for centuries. It is known for its ability to treat a range of ailments from the common cold to high blood pressure, however being able to measure a therapeutic dose of raw garlic can prove to be challenging. Raw Garlic can also be hard to digest and it will do no favours to your breath!

I use garlic in most of my cooking as it has many health benefits; however I also use Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract which is raw garlic that has gone through a unique heat free ageing process that transforms the garlic into a powerful antioxidant.

This process ensures that all of the active compounds are not damaged, it is more bioavailable than regular garlic, it is odourless and it also eliminates the sulphur containing compounds that can cause gut irritation and heart burn for some people.

Question: How does garlic support our heart health?

Emma Sutherland: There have been hundreds of studies conducted which have confirmed the ability of garlic to reduce parameters associated with cardiovascular disease.

So how does it help support a healthy heart?

Garlic has Cholesterol and Lipid- lowering effects. In fact, several studies have indicated that garlic inhibits key enzymes involved in cholesterol and fatty acid synthesis. Furthermore, it has been shown that water soluble compounds like S-allyl-Cysteine which are present in Aged Garlic Extract are even more effective in inhibiting cholesterol.

Aged Garlic Extract has also been shown to decrease diastolic blood pressure and slow the progression of coronary artery calcification. This means that Aged Garlic Extract may prove useful for patients who are at high risk of future cardiovascular events.

Finally, according to breakthrough research Aged Garlic Extract may help to reduce plaque and blockages around the coronary arteries and lower blood pressure. This is due to the ageing process that transforms garlic into a powerful antioxidant.

Question: And therefore this protects us again heart disease?

Emma Sutherland: It certainly helps however there are many factors when it comes to heart disease.

Some people could be at a greater risk of developing heart disease due to family medical history and for others, their lifestyles can certainly affect their heart heath.

Ensuring that you are eating a balanced, nutrient dense diet, are exercising daily, drinking lots of water etc. is also important.

Question: Is add garlic to our meals enough to get these health benefits?

Emma Sutherland: It would be difficult to put enough garlic into your meals to get a therapeutic dose, but it still good to include.

If you are someone who experiences heart burn or gut irritation from raw garlic though, I would look at getting a Kyolic Aged Garlic Supplement instead.

Question: How can we incorporate garlic into our diet?

Emma Sutherland: I usually add it into the base of most of my savoury meals. You can roast cloves of garlic, stir fry it and include it into soups and dip such as guacamole!

Question: What other kitchen ingredients keep our heart happy?

Emma Sutherland: Salmon due to its high amounts of omega 3 fatty acids which are great for a healthy heart.
Ground Flaxseed due to its high amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, fibre and phytoestrogens. Flaxseeds are great to add to your morning granola and yoghurt or baked goods like muffins.
Black and Kidney Beans due to their B- complex vitamins, niacin, folate, magnesium, omega 3 fatty acids, calcium and soluble fibre.
Walnuts and Almonds due to their omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, heart favourable mono and poly unsaturated fats and phytosterols.

Question: What's the next nutrient on the health block?

Emma Sutherland: The next antioxidant to keep an eye on is Ubiquinol.

Ubiquinol is actually found naturally in the body and its role is to extract energy from food and assist in powering the body's overall energy levels as well as supporting the health of our major organs, including our heart!

Science shows that as we age or put our bodies under stress our Ubiquinol levels decline often leaving us feeling fatigued and lacking in energy. It is very hard to boost your Ubiquinol levels from food sources, so your healthcare practitioner may suggest supplementation.
