Freedom Stories to Screen on Community TV

Melbourne: Channel 31 Sunday 4th December at 7.30pm
Adelaide: Channel 44 Saturday 10th December at 8.30pm

Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide and Perth television audiences will have the opportunity to watch this important documentary on their local community free-to-air station in early December. Directed by Melbourne filmmaker Steve Thomas it features the moving, personal stories of former -boat people' who now call Australia home.

Despite wide acclaim and popular demand, neither ABC nor SBS have seen fit to screen Freedom Stories and so community TV has stepped in. This feature documentary premiered at the 2015 Sydney International Film Festival and has been shown at international festivals as far apart as Canberra and Harlem. It has made many metropolitan and regional cinema and community appearances, including over 200 community and school screenings nationally during Refugee Week.

Freedom Stories is a collaborative documentary (99 mins) that puts a human face to the -boat people' debate. The film explores the achievements of former asylum seekers who arrived in Australian waters from the Middle East around 2001, a watershed year in Australian politics. Locked away in remote detention centres and then placed on temporary protection visas, some were just kids at the time.
Their limbo lasted for years. Now Australian citizens, they are finally building secure lives and contributing to their new country. These are ordinary people who live among us now and it is high time that their voices and stories were widely heard.
