As the Winter draws to an end, Sydneysiders will be able to enjoy a traditional German Christmas Winter Market at the German International School Sydney (GISS) on Friday 16th August. Complete with market stalls featuring handmade festive decorations, crafts and jewellery, the GISS German Christmas Market will also be a German gastronomic delight with visitors feasting on traditional Christmas sweets and waffles, pretzels, bratwurst, currywurst and gluhwein.
Visitors will be greeted by the sweet aroma of sugared almonds, lovingly prepared by students from Year 12, Primary School students will perform winter songs while their parents transform the school grounds into a winter wonderland with hundreds of fairy lights and sparkling snowflakes adorning classroom windows and market stalls.
When darkness falls, a procession of children will embark on the customary German Lantern Walk, a walk which has been enjoyed for centuries by German children. All children are welcome to join the spectacular light and sound parade where they'd be guided by colourful and artistic lanterns and sing lantern songs.
With the Terrey Hills Fire Brigade on hand, a bonfire will be closely monitored for those who wish to participate in the popular activity of toasting marshmallows, which can be washed down with a decadent hot chocolate or non-alcoholic kinder gluhwein. The GISS school choir will also keep visitors thoroughly entertained by singing Christmas carols and winter songs.
The German International School Sydney is encouraging Sydneysiders to embrace the winter spirit, invite family and friends and enjoy a traditional German Christmas Market on Friday 16th August from 5.30pm to 8pm.
