Get the Hottest Looks from the Astra Awards
The 8th Annual ASTRA Awards, held on Thursday 24th of June, 2010 at the Sydney State Theatre, hosted the most glamorous A-list line-up to date. Amongst the stars gracing the red carpet, Alicia Banit (Tangle), Camille Keenan (Rush) and Miranda Otto (War of the Worlds) glowed with their stunning make-up looks and fabulous hair styles. Make-up artists, Napoleon Perdis, and hair stylist, GHD, from the evening, have let us in on the secrets to recreating their dazzling red carpet looks.
Get the Look: Youthful Evening Glamour like Alicia BanitMake-Up by Napoleon Perdis: Alicia Banit's look was kept youthful and fresh. Her natural complexion was made flawless with a light spray of Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation then softly contoured with Camera Finish two shades darker than her complexion. A little flush was added to the apples of the cheeks in applying Blush Patrol, which gave colour and an ethereal glow. The eyes were lightly defined with taupe and champagne hues to open the eyes (Colour Disc #44, Taupe, Ultra Pearl #37 Champagne) then given a 1950's finish with a lick of China Doll Gel Eyeliner in Equinox along the top lash line. Her lips were dressed with a soft, rose gloss (Luminous Lip Veil in In the Flesh) for a luxurious pout.
Hair Styling by GHD: The dress was a very classic style, and also because she is quite young they really wanted to have a little bit of fun with the hair and create something a little bit loose.
The following products were used: GHD IV Styler in Green Envy, GHD Thermal Protector, GHD Maximise Mousee and GHD Creation Spray.
The first step was to protect the hair with GHD Thermal Protector and GHD Maximise Mousse to give it a little bit of body. They then divided the hair into two sections, top and bottom and lightly mist the top of the head only with GHD Creation Spray. Using the GHD Styler, they created a water wave by twisting the styler over and under as it glides through each section of the hair. The bottom section was pulled into a ponytail and low chignon. Finally, piece by piece, the water waved section was pulled over the chignon, leaving some bits out.
Get the Look: Classic Glamour like Camille KeenanMake-Up by Napoleon Perdis: Camille Keenan went for an edgier look for this year's Astra Awards with sultry, liner rimmed eyes playing off her romantic, lace gown. To bring out her icy, blue eyes, deep teal and gun-metal grey hues (Colour Disc #27. Charcoal, Loose Dust #3. Turquoise, Colour Disc #29. Black) were used with a touch of warmth through the socket to avoid the look appearing too stark against her flawless, pale skin. To keep the intensity of the smokey eye crisp all night long, China Doll Gel Eyeliner was used on the inner rim and all over the eyelid plus along the lower lashes for instant, rich texture and a buildable base.
Lips were kept natural to balance the intensity of the smokey eye. First, a light coat of DeVine Goddess Lipstick in Nymphe was applied to the lips then a generous amount of Lip Lacquer in Clearly Glam coated over the top.
Hair Styling by GHD: The dress was asymmetrical so her hair fell on the other side where her shoulder would be bare. A loosely pulled back style also accentuated her beautiful drop earrings.
The following products were used: GHD IV Styler in Red Lust, GHD Maximise Mousse, GHD Creation Spray, GHD Ultimate Hairspray and GHD Reflection Spray.
Her hair was prepped with GHD Maximise Mousse and set into the hair with a blow dry. The hair was curled with a GHD IV Styler, prepping each section of hair with GHD Creation Spray for extra hold. Back-combing the top section created a barrel curl, which was then pulled in at the sides and sprayed with GHD Ultimate Hairspray. The top section was lightly combed out and smoothed down with the GHD IV Styler to give it a shiny finish. Finally the top section was pulled into the bottom and pinned down, using GHD Ultimate Hairspray for extra hold, and finished off with GHD Reflection Spray for the final shine.
Get the Look: Playful Sophistication like Miranda OttoMake-Up by Napoleon Perdis: Recreate Miranda's soft, smokey eye by using hues of steel, charcoal and creamy taupe (Colour Disc #33. Taupe, Colour Disc #27. Charcoal). Keep the strongest point of definition at the lash lines and graduate colour away to nothing as the colour reaches the socket.
To keep the smokey eye crease-free all night long, begin the eye by blending a touch of China Doll Gel Eyeliner in Earth over the mobile lid and along the lower lash line. This will help to hold shadow on top and provide a barrier against any oils produced on the eyelid.
Miranda has the most amazing, pale skin to be seen so a quick, light spray of Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation made her camera ready and shine free.
