Gourmet Farmer season four premieres 8.00pm, Thursday 3 August on SBS
It's been over 7 years (and three Gourmet Farmer series) since Matthew Evans left a busy, city career as a food critic, to become a farmer and locavore in Southern Tasmania. He can now add the title restaurateur to his by-line.
In search of a more tangible way to share the splendour of Fat Pig Farm and its produce with the world, Matthew decided to open a restaurant; Fat Pig Kitchen. Building a farm-to-table restaurant and commercial kitchen had been a long-time dream of his and wife Sadie, but they had no idea how truly rewarding (and challenging) it would be.
Series host, Matthew Evans, said: 'This new property has been a true labour of love for Sadie, Headley and me. We have loved sharing our life on the farm with Australian audiences over the years and are thrilled to have them along for the ride on this new and exciting adventure as well".
This heart-warming, ten-episode series will immerse Australian audiences in the family's life on their new farm, chronicling the ups and downs Matthew and Sadie faced leading up to the restaurant's first service. The series sees the couple in and out of the kitchen, preparing delicious, home-cooked recipes and meeting fellow local providores to further explore the beauty of the region.
'For Fat Pig Kitchen, sustainability is a huge priority - we want our farm to produce the vast majority of food served in the restaurant. By managing and nurturing it respectfully, we hope to unlock the bounty of these 70 acres and share it with our restaurant guests and Gourmet Farmer audiences", said Matthew.
Diners experience first-hand where their food on the seasonal menu comes from by visiting the farm's paddocks and vegetable garden during each sitting. For those who want to roll up their sleeves, there are workshops taught by Matthew and his epicurean colleagues; how to butcher a cow, how to make salami, how to build a chicken coop, how to milk cows and make cheese; and how to build a wood-fired oven.
The doors have been flung open, and Matthew has been put to the test as a restaurateur. Food critic turned farmer turned restaurateur…how hard could it be?
Gourmet Farmer season four airs Thursdays at 8.00pm on SBS from August 3
