The Modern Mod
Hints & Tips from Helene Abicair Creative Director- Rohan Widdison
Winter 2004 heralds the comeback of 60's styling with Mod. But before you get out that mini and pull on those boots, know that Mod makeup has had a makeover.
Modern Mod is 60's inspired vision rather than a direct copy of the retro look. Although striking, Modern Mod is a far softer and easily achievable look that will leave you groovy and gorgeous in no time!
Rohan Widdison, Creative Director of Helene Abicair Beauty College, tells us how to achieve the Modern Mod in easy to follow steps.
Skin
The Modern Mod's radiant complexion is achieved through the use of carefully blended concealer and foundation.
To keep makeup looking fresh and provide the perfect canvas for foundation, apply a neutral primer to clean, well - moisturised skin. Carefully blend concealer under the eyes focusing on the inner corners and over any other imperfections. Dot foundation closest to your skin tone on the forehead, cheeks, chin and nose and blend well with fingers. To set foundation apply a light dusting of translucent powder.Eyes
Like the 60s Mod, eyes are the major focus of the Modern Mod. This time around however, the look is far less heavy. Softer shades of black and rich browns set the look.
First, prime your eyelid with translucent power to extend shadow wear and prevent creasing. The Modern Mod should steer clear of white shadows. Instead, blend a soft beige or cream shadow from the lash line to the brow
Smudge a black liner or kohl pencil along the upper lash line and extend up slightly at the outer corners of the eye. Starting from the inner lid (three quarters of the way in), apply a rich chocolate brown or soft black shadow along the socket line. Sweep colour out and up to the brow bone to achieve a feline look. Line lower lids with black liner or kohl pencil. Softly lining the inside of your lower lid with white eyeliner will brighten the whites of your eyes.Curl lashes and finish with several coats of rich volumising mascara. Recoat the outer eyelashes for extra definition. Wiggling the mascara brush at the base of the lashes and up to the tips adds body and curl. Cheeks
Although underrated, blush is an essential part of a complete makeup. When applied correctly blush is a subtle contouring tool to define the cheekbones and complement eye and lip colour. The Modern Mod requires soft pinks, peaches and light bronze.
To achieve a natural look apply blush with a round tip brush to the apples of the cheeks in a soft circular motion. Don't forget to groom your brows!
A well- defined brow is very important. Brows shape the face and if groomed properly open up the eye area.
A taupe brow pencil is recommended for blondes and dark blondes.Brunettes and those with black hair should use a soft brown.
Apply the brow pencil in a shade that complements your brow colour.Define the natural shape of your brow with the pencil or fill in sparse areas with fine small strokes, then brush over to soften. Lips
The Modern Mod knows that super pale and white lips are dead. To achieve a modern understated lip colour, softly line lips with a nude liner and apply a very soft shade of pink gloss or lipstick with a lip brush and blend. The finished product:
