Holas May Protest Interview

Holas May Calls for Action on Climate Change with Protest

Adelaide-based independent artist Holas May kicks off his 2020 with his new single 'Protest' available on all streaming platforms now.

Protest is a topical song that discusses the artist's call for action on climate change. It represents an outburst of emotion which is a great outlet for his ideas that no doubt his peers are also feeling towards the current Australian Government, calling on his leaders to act and mitigate the effects of climate change. Australia's recent catastrophic bushfires and it's lack of resolution are the primary issues being targeted in the new offering. The idea of 'Protest' is to reflect the frustration felt by the majority of the youth in Australia towards the government, a bold move from the newly discovered Adelaide emcee, who shows no fear in exercising his free speech.

"I really wanted to reflect the frustration felt by not only the youth but also the majority of the country; the cover art shows what climate change can do if we don't seriously take action on it. I'm not an expert in the field but all I know that this affects ALL of us." - Holas May

Holas continuously works on creating timely and relevant music, taking inspiration from old school poets and legends like Tupac and Busta Rhymes to more contemporary modern artists such as Kanye West and Drake. Cuts from his first release 'Confidence Found' received support from Triple J's Home & Hosed presenter Declan Byrne last year which came off the back of his success earlier in 2019 being featured on Fresh 92.7 and receiving a nomination for 'People's Choice Hip Hop Artist' at the South Australian Music Awards. Holas isn't doubling back and will continue to utilize his music as a meaningful purpose to trigger change this new year.

Interview with Holas May

Question: How would you describe your music?

Holas May: In development, my sound is still growing and taking shape; but it's turning out to be a "loud mouth" type of style which is what I really like, as it suits me as an Artist.

Question: Can you tell us about Protest?

Holas May: "Protest" is a song about Youth Frustration towards the government; it's not a song about overthrowing them or it's not a song about me saying "F**k scomo" but it's just a piece about young people being fed up with the older generation in power not listening to us as much as they should.

Question: What inspired Protest?

Holas May: All of the most recent protests that have taken place by young people and the most recent actions taken by the Prime Minister.

Question: Is there a particular message you hope listeners take from your music?

Holas May: Yeah! I like to hope that the message would be to do your own thing no matter what and to not be afraid of who you are.

Like for example - being a rapper in Australia isn't promoted or celebrated like it is in the United States. So it's a big thing to step out in the world here and do what you love in the face of incredible odds.

Question: How has climate change influenced your music?

Holas May: For this particular song it has definitely been a big influence because climate change is one of the most important subjects to talk about in our day in age, period.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Holas May: I love recording, working on new music really brings joy into my life; though I do love performing - I prefer recording.

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

Holas May: "Back With You" is so much fun to perform because it's so easy to dance to and it has so much energy!

Question: What should we expect from your upcoming tour?

Holas May: If I ever got that opportunity in future you would expect lots of energy; new songs as well as my older works too!

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Holas May: Probably Drake.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Holas May: Many, many things in life - from love to sadness and banter to anger.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Holas May: Clipping
Bon Iver
Kanye West

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Holas May: Tupac - his ability to story tell really caught my interest.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Holas May: Sia - she's an amazing songwriter and it would be a dream come true to work with her!

Question: How did it feel to hear your song played all over the airwaves?

Holas May: It's good to hear it on community radios.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Holas May: Get up - go to work - go home - work on music - repeat.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Holas May: Just making awesome music for myself and others, seeing my passion come to life is my favourite part.

Question: What's next, for you?

Holas May: More songs - hopeful for shows too.

Question: Can you share your socials?
