One of the most striking, distinctive and critically-acclaimed films to emerge from Europe in recent years, Alexei Popogrebsky's How I Ended This Summer is a compelling morality tale and a heart-racing thriller, filmed against the spectacular landscape of the pristine Russian Arctic.
Pavel is a young student, filling out his post-graduation summer months at a remote meteorological outpost with only the gruff, non-communicative Sergei as company. A solemn man who takes great pride in the repetition of his work, Sergei is irritated by Pavel's careless and complacent behaviour. Whilst they tolerate each other, one day Pavel intercepts grave news for Sergei that he is too frightened to pass on for fear of retribution.
Filmed entirely on location in the easternmost tip of Russia, How I Ended This Summer features unforgettable cinematography, masterfully utilising the majestic, yet terrifyingly stark landscape, matched with exceptional performances and a masterful slow-burn story.
How I Ended This Summer has extensively toured the 2010/2011 festival circuit – appearing as Official Selection at the Berlin International Film Festival 2010, Chicago Film Festival 2010, BFI London Film Festival 2010, Sydney Film Festival 2010, and many more.
In addition, the film has also garnered a slew of prestigious international awards, including the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival awards for the -Silver Bear for Best Actor' (shared by both leads) and the -Silver Bear for Best Artistic Achievement', as well as awards for -Best Film' from both the 2010 BFI London and Chicago Film Festivals.
