Hailing from Adelaide, but blasting on radios world-wide, Indy Stanton is set to make her mark again with her newest single "Like Me." The track is a fun filled pop ballad ready to make you dance out that heart break. Since her grand entrance into the music scene in 2019 with her debut album, The Candle Room, Indy has been captivating audiences with her witty lyrics and unique melodies.
"This song is something really new for me. I had an ex who told me I was a total psychopath; and I believed it," said Indy. "After we had broken up and I started dating again, I kept hearing her voice in my head telling me I was crazy and too messed up to be dating anyone. Suddenly, I had the idea that I needed to 'warn' anyone who was interested in me. I had to give them a total breakdown of what they would be signing up for.
I finally came to the conclusion that I wasn't necessarily crazy, I was just reacting to a really wild situation. I've dated since then and I've come to see that I am okay, it was just a really unhealthy relationship – but it was kinda fun and cathartic to describe myself from her point of view, and that's what I've done with this song. It's also a super empowering feeling to use phrases that she's used and no longer believe them when I hear them."
Shaped by an unhealthy relationship and the self perception and awareness it had given Indy, "Like Me" is a testimonial to the warnings she would give to new lovers of her 'psychotic' persona. Growing out of the idea that she was the integrator, but more the victim of a wild situation, "Like Me" is giving Indy Stanton liberation and empowerment, putting it in the past tense.
Sonically, "Like Me" is certainly more pop than Indy has done before. Working with an infamously pop focussed producer Sam Morrison (aka Supanever) posed the perfect opportunity for Stanton to explore a different sound. "I was really impressed with Indy's previous work, but wanted to take her music in a new direction," said Supanever. "I wanted to take her pop style vocal, and bring some grit and dirt to her production, giving the song some rough edges. Influenced by producers like Diplo, Flume and Mura Masa, I wanted to make a song that could lie comfortably between the underground and the mainstream."
5 Things you didn't know about Indy Stanton:
1. Some of my most heart-felt lyrics have actually been about fictional couples from movies or tv shows *cough* Ross and Rachel *cough*.
2. I have a lemonade addiction.
3. I think cold cheese is disgusting but I love melted cheese. They taste different and I will stand by that statement until the day I die.
4. I have seen every episode of Friends about a million times and totally had/still have a crush on Rachel, just like the rest of the world.
5. Every year, I wake up at 4am to watch Eurovision. I'm obsessed. The costume changes, the key changes, the over-the-top stage production.. it's a gift from Europe, honestly.
