Jess Spahr Bring Me Down To My Knees Interview

Electro Pop Fabulousness

Sydney based singer songwriter Jess Spahr shoots from the post hangover hip with the brand new single - 'Brings Me Down To My Knees'. This is Jess's third single all up following the previous single 'Tensions' Tensions and the debut 'Betray Me'. The latter is taken from the debut EP 'Wilderness' which was released in 2018.

Jess isn't your run of the mill musician. She picked up the Violin @ the age of 6. Then trained as a contemporary pianist and started winning Eisteddfods around Sydney. It was pretty much set in stone that music would be her life. Jess offers a refreshing take on life and music with a take no prisoners honesty in her music and lyrics

''Bring Me Down To My Knees is not the typical broken heart song. It actually was written after a boozy night out and how I woke up on my driveway hugging my dad's car wheel; Multiple glasses of wine that night really brought me down to my knees hahahaha. Not only is the song up beat and a rocker, the song name makes for the best puns''. Jess Spahr

''Jess Spahr''s song "Tensions" is upbeat and has an unconventional momentum and energy with fantastic textural elements in the percussion all buoyed by Spahr's bright and expressive vocals. Fans of Goldfrapp will find much to like about this song as it has a similar ear for sonic detail and architecture''. Queen City Sounds and Arts

Part of the magic mix is her sonic sparring partner and production collaborator Luke Carra from Caravan Sun. Jess pen's the lyrics then it's straight down to nailing the slinky sonic sound and direction.

I actually wrote this song as a ballad, but when I got into the studio my producer Luke Carra and I quote said "this will sound sick as a rocker" So working together with Ian Pritchett sound engineer, we created this banger of a song. I was always unsure of how I felt about the song, since it was so different from anything I have written or performed before, but on stage this songs goes off. Jess Spahr

Interview with Jess Spahr

Question: Can you tell us about Bring Me Down To My Knees?

Jess Spahr: Bring Me Down To My Knees is not your typical love song like everyone thinks! It is a song about a really boozy night on German beer. In the morning I woke up with Maccas in one hand and the other hugging my Dad's car tyre in our drive way (laughs).

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Jess Spahr: I actually love both, I get different energies from both.

Live I get to pump out the songs that I love and show them to the world. There is so much energy on stage when you are performing with a live band.

When I record I am creating the art that I get to perform live, I get to see every inch of how this art is made, every mistake and every triumph.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Jess Spahr: Hitting a deadline usually is one of the main things (laughs). Knowing I am going into the studio, I sit down and usually write two days straight beforehand. But anything can really motivate me, when the moment strikes I write.

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

Jess Spahr: I have to say either Weapon Of Capture or Bring Me Down To My Knees. Two different reasons; people are captured by weapon of capture (laughs). They stop and listen because it is a violin start and that's something you don't see all the time.

Bring Me Down To My Knees is always a banger and everyone gets up to dance! It is a really crowd pleaser.

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Jess Spahr: That's a tough one, at the moment it would be my Oma, unfortunately she passed a few weeks ago and she missed my performance in Berlin by one week! She always spoke of how she wanted to see me live, so if I could have anyone it would be her.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Jess Spahr: I listen to a variety, never one. Eagles, Ed Sheehan, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Spice Girls (laughs) and Savage Garden.
They are just some from my European tour playlist, but I always turn back to beloved London Grammar and I love listening to classical, baroque and romantic music.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Jess Spahr: I have always loved music, it is born and bred.

Actually having a crack at the music industry is something I have always wanted to do and I guess after my divorce it kicked me in the butt and I decided to focus on myself and really try!

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Jess Spahr: London Grammar definitely, would love to see their insight on some of my songs!

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Jess Spahr: Biggest challenge was organising and surviving my first European tour. The stress of taking instruments, cost, logistics ect was a lot to take it. But it was so worth it!

Question: What's a typical day like?

Jess Spahr: I get up go to the gym, do admin work, teach and in between that, eat.

Question: Can you share your socials?

Jess Spahr: Facebook.com/jessspahr12/
