Park rangers at seven national parks, reserves and historic sites on the Mornington Peninsula will host free autumn programs for kids these school holidays. Parks Victoria's FREE Junior Ranger program offers energetic experiences in Mornington Peninsula's great outdoors, helping kids grow their minds and appreciation of our environment and history, as well as stretching those active limbs.
The popular Junior Ranger holiday program is for children aged between 6 – 12 years old and is hosted by Parks Victoria rangers. It's free to register for activities throughout the Mornington Peninsula from Monday 3rd April – Thursday 13th April.
These holidays we're growing outdoor kids, history buffs and nature detectives with programs like -Wildlife Detectives', -Nature Treasure Hunts', -Beach Treasure Hunts' and -Flora Explorers' at a number of parks. Point Nepean National Park's -Fired Up' program promises to captivate kids with fire stories and trucks, and help them gain an insight into how fires are planned for and managed in protected areas. Nearby at Sorrento the Collins Settlement Site features a visit to early settler graves to learn their stories, as well as the important connections for Traditional Owners.
With very few lighthouses in Australia still operating, -Beneath the Lighthouse' unveils the histories and mysteries of lighthouse living. This is a unique chance to visit the Cape Schanck Lightstation and enjoy the winding walk to the top of the light house balcony with a ranger.
The Mornington Peninsula National Park's Gunnamatta Beach ocean shore will feature a -Beach Treasure Hunt' as family and friends work together to discover colours, textures and patterns on the shoreline.
Coastal park adventures aren't complete without -Rockpool Rambles' and the popular Flinders program at Mushroom Reef Marine Sanctuary introduces kids to strange creatures that lurk within Victoria's coastal waters and rockpools. Budding bird-watchers can also bring their binoculars to Coolart Wetlands and Homestead as -Finding Feathered Friends' shares bird identification tips in the wetlands.
Just add food, water and protection against the elements and you'll be growing healthy outdoor Junior Ranger kids this Autumn. Our rangers love helping fertilise life-long passions for the environment and history on the Mornington Peninsula.
All activities are free, but bookings are essential and open from 27 March, 2017 at www.juniorrangers.com.au. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
