Kirrah Amosa Shines A Light On Bullying With New Single 'I Don't Need It'

Emerging Sydney Electro/RNB singer/songwriter Kirrah Amosa shines a light on bullying with her new single 'I Don't Need It'.

Written when she was in high school, 'I Don't Need It' is an anthem for those who have ever felt bullied, different or excluded.

Kirrah reflects and admits that she wasn't a huge hit throughout her school years - many times she was bullied and isolated and pushed to the outside circle.

"This single is about the people that thought cutting down those around them would rise them up - I don't need that. I was often people's second option as a friend, sports partner, girlfriend,"

"I had people older than me wanting me to prove I deserved their approval to be recognised as a human being - and I sure as hell don't need that, so Bye Felicia with the need to impress because I don't need it," she said.

Honing in on her craft, Kirrah now based in Sydney is a Canberra native who has graced the music and entertainment scene from the age of seven forming an arsenal of performances in musicals, plays and live social and corporate events. Her luscious vocals and stand-out performances have cemented her in the music industry.

Kirrah's previous release 'Fallin' garnered attention from The Edge's K-Sera and The Dirty Dozen, AAA Backstage and tastemakers across the globe. Kirrah is gearing up to release an album due to drop later this year.

Interview with Kirrah Amosa

Question: How would you describe your music?

Kirrah Amosa: I'd say my music is like a Kehlani/Beyonce/Mac Miller apple crumble.

Question: What message do you hope to spread with your music?

Kirrah Amosa: Music is like medicine, it's definitely a universal language that can calm or hype or help you face whatever you're feeling. On my hardest days, I write my best music - it may be selfish or it may be generous but music is my emotional outlet. I just hope my music gives people whatever strength they need and makes them realise they aren't alone in their struggles or their successes.

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

Kirrah Amosa: I definitely love either If I Ain't Got You by Alicia keys - because of its simple yet heartfelt words - or Bruno's Finesse Remix with Cardi's added verse - because I was born to rap.... at least I think so, when I slay her first verse, (laughs)!

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Kirrah Amosa: My Dad's parents - they don't have a lot and there's a slight language barrier so sometime they don't understand much but they endlessly give their time and support which to me is the most valuable. So if I could, I'd take them everywhere with me!

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Kirrah Amosa: Performing live is the bees knees, I'd choose that over recording for sure.

Question: What is the story behind the band name?

Kirrah Amosa: A few months ago I tried cutting my last name out of the picture, because I thought it was getting too long to announce and I didn't want to drag my family's name with me if anything went wrong. But recently I was reminded how important it is to wear my colours with pride, so now if anything, I use my last name as motivation to stay afloat and as a reminder of where my musical gifts and life inspo come from.

Question: How did the band come together?

Kirrah Amosa: My Dad is a musician so everything I know, I learnt from years of admiring and learning from him. He would also take me to church where I'd be surrounded by my family, singing in the congregation. However, my confidence comes from my Mama, who would sing with us anywhere and everywhere, teaching my five siblings and I to share our gift freely and fearlessly.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Kirrah Amosa: I'm such an emotional human so I usually always have something to write about. Writing music is therapeutic for me so every word I sing has come from a personal experience, both good and bad.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Kirrah Amosa: I'm unhealthily obsessed with H.E.R and Mac Miller at the moment, but when I need something classic I'll always go back to Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Kirrah Amosa: In the most humble way I can say this, I was my own influence. Growing up I battled with the idea that there were so many girls like me so why would I make it anywhere, but last year I moved away from the safety of my home and family and realised that I'm more than capable of holding my own in this industry and that, in fact, there is no one out there that has the combination of talents and tastes that I can bring to the table. In the same way, I can't be a version of anyone else.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Kirrah Amosa: I'd give my left arm to collab with Mac Miller, God rest his talented soul. Anderson Paak is definitely a close second.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Kirrah Amosa: The human connections I've made through writing, performing and releasing music has made every struggle and rejection worth it. I've met the most important people in my life through music, can't beat that!
