From the award-winning team behind Kakadu, comes a new 3 x 1 hour observational documentary series, Life On The Reef. This stunning and important series premieres Sunday 1 March 2015 at 7.40pm on ABC. Filmed over the course of a year, Life On The Reef follows those who live in one of the most extraordinary places on the planet.
Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest living structure and one of the richest and most complex natural ecosystems on Earth. To some, this place is full of mystery and hardship, an alien world full of bizarre, beautiful and deadly creatures. To others, it is home.
Set against a backdrop of extraordinary marine habitats, ranging from coral reefs to tropical islands, shallow estuaries to deep oceanic waters – Life On The Reef takes the audience above and beneath the waters as nature adapts to the changing seasons throughout the year.
Along the 2300km of coastline - an area larger than the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Holland combined - rangers and marine park officers work together with the traditional owners, search and rescue crews, scientists and tourism operators to safeguard the reef and protect the millions of residents, tourists, divers and fisherman who visit each year.
Incredible time-lapse and aerial photography embraces the enormity of the marine park, while stunning high-speed cinematography captures the essence of what it means to be wild.
Life On The Reef combines the strongest elements of observational documentary story-telling with blue chip natural history, presenting unique, fresh and authentic stories of Australia's greatest natural icon through the actions and adventures of the people who live there.
Produced by Northern Pictures in association with Screen Australia, Screen Queensland, PBS, Arte France and ABC TV.
