Interview with Clarence Ryan

Question: How did you get in to acting?

Clarence Ryan: I loved watching movies especially comedy and horrors.I guess watching actors on screen influenced me to want to start acting. Honestly I was very young when I made that decision. I was around 10 but my mum never seemed to have doubt in me and always was supportive with my acting career, you could say it was my mum that got me into acting.

Question: Is it hard juggling acting and your social life?

Clarence Ryan: Juggling acting and my social life I find difficult sometimes, but there's always a way to overcome the stress. I stress myself out a lot thinking, "god how am I going to do these both". It's not hard; you simply find a balance that fits your needs.

Question: Do you and Sean Keenan (Lockie Leonard) get along like your characters do?

Clarence Ryan: Sean Keenan is my good mate and we still are. We got along perfectly for the six months filming in Albany and spent nearly every day seeing each other and the same with Corey McKernan, they're both great friends and great actors. I'm really fortunate to have worked with them.

Question: Any funny stories you would like to share with us about your time filming with the rest of the cast?

Clarence Ryan: I would have to say everyday brought something new and funny when we were on set with the cast and crew. I mean it's not like the cast are not allowed to talk to the crew, it doesn't work like that and I thinks that's what made filming Lockie Leonard so fun and relaxed. No one felt uncomfortable, everyone knew each other.

Question: What is it like behind the scenes of a TV Series? Do you and the rest of the cast get on well?

Clarence Ryan: Sean Keenan, Corey McKernan and I enjoyed playing Hacky sack during our breaks. We would get in a circle and test our skills. When we were not filming a scene I would go to our van and chill, talk to the catering crew who were awesome, we just relaxed until we were needed for filming. It's not like the cast and crew a forbidden to talk to each other. No it's totally opposite, although we all have a job to do and can't spend all day talking. But everyone's cool, relaxed and it's like were one big family. We had our ups and downs but I guess no one's perfect.

Question: Were you a fan of the Lockie Leonard books before you got the role?

Clarence Ryan: To be honest I heard of the books but never read them. I'm not a book person but I love reading scripts. I can sit there for hours reading a script but once you put a book in my hand my brain just wonders off and I lose concentration.

Question: You were nominated for an AFI for your role in the film September - how cool was that experience?

Clarence Ryan: Yes I was nominated for an AFI which was totally unexpected for me. I was shocked and happy at the same time thinking I've seen this on TV when they hand out awards to actors, and I was even more shocked when I was there. All these familiar faces around me and I'm just looking thinking "wow am I really here". Being nominated has its benefits, people start to take more interest in you, your name starts to be bought for a project, all these little things come with being nominated and even better if you win.
