Madison Butler, 20, has suffered with eczema since she was a child. She's always struggled with self-confidence because her skin was blotchy, red and raw from the eczema. When she played soccer, it was so bad her knuckles would bleed, and she became really self-conscious of the red, raw and often weeping sores on her skin. The worst was the back of her knees, creases in her elbows and knuckles.
It was also all over her arms and legs and she would get comments from people asking why her skin was so bad. Even on hot days she wore a jumper to cover her arms.
Madison tried everything to clear up her skin – at one point in primary school visiting a Chinese medical clinic and taking 42 tablets a day (21 in the morning and 21 at night).
Nothing worked until she found Australian brand MooGoo (which seems to have developed a cult-like following, with one of their eczema creams being snapped up every two minutes). The $18.50 Eczema and Psoriasis Cream cleared hear skin up almost overnight. She's even wearing singlets now!
Question: Can you tell us about how your eczema previously affected you on a daily basis?
Madison Butler: My earliest memory of my eczema is from when I was around 10 years old. I played in a soccer team and it would get so bad that I would have to sit out on training some nights due to my knuckles bleeding and weeping as a result of my scratching. When I have a flare up it is extremely uncomfortable as the skin is cracked, raw, weeping (sometimes bleeding) and uncontrollably itchy. Trying to heal the skin once I have had an episode is also a big task as clothes tend to stick to the skin, irritating it even further.
Question: How did your eczema affect your self-confidence?
Madison Butler: As I have gotten older and more comfortable in my skin I don't tend to worry what other people think anymore, however, when I was between the ages of 12-16 I was extremely self-conscious. I would tend to wear long sleeve shirts or jumpers wherever possible to try and hide the eczema I had on my arms in fear of being judged or having to explain what was wrong with my skin.
Question: How did you previously try and cure your eczema?
Madison Butler: Before MooGoo I had tried Dermatologists, intolerance skin prick testing, Chinese herbal remedies, steroid creams, doctors etc. I used to take 42 herbal tablets per day at one stage!
