Marc Jacobs, ACMI and BryanBoy a match made in handbag heaven.
New York and Paris lands at ACMI for the Melbourne Fashion Festival, in the form of our fashion super hero Marc Jacobs.
Marc Jacobs, the designer of his own signature fashion collections and those of the French luxury label Louis Vuitton in Paris, is one of the most provocative forces in global fashion.
To celebrate this prodigious talent ACMI is currently running six films showcasing Marc Jacobs' career, creations, collaborations and influences.
The films include; Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton (2007), Marc Jacobs' New York (various), Marc Jacobs - Designer Marathon (1984-2008), in Louis Vuitton, Champs-Elysées, The Countdown (2005), The Darjeeling Limited (2007), and Slaves of New York (1989).
An absolute must see is Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton by director Loic Prigent. Prigent captures the tensions, the design process, Marc Jacobs living on protein bars when there is no time to eat, and the team living on 2 hours of sleep a night coming up to the Paris Fashion shows. When the film is finished you leave feeling like you were there.
The documentary culminates in the finished creation of the LV Patchwork Bag referred to as the handbag of all handbags, made up entirely of earlier Vuitton handbags, and is worth a cool $42,000 US.
Quotes from the doco's:
"important and fashion shouldn't be used in the same sentence" Marc Jacobs
"fashion has to change every season" Marc Jacobs
"if we didn't love fashion we'd be naked" Uma Thurman
