Interview with Midnite Sleaze
Question: Who is Midnite Sleze?
Midnite Sleaze: We are DJ's/Producers from Melbourne. We run Bamboo Music record label and we host a weekly radio show on Kiss FM.
Question: How would you describe your music?
Midnite Sleaze: Our sound is very upfront, we play a lot of new music in our sets. We re-edit almost everything we play in the club. Lots of deep basslines, jackin house grooves and stripped back tech sounds.
Question: What did it take to break into the music industry?
Midnite Sleaze: It's very cliché, but a lot of hard work, determination and effort. I guess taking full advantage of the opportunities that are presented.
Question: What's your inspiration when creating tracks?
Midnite Sleaze: We draw from lots of different places. We listen to a ton of records in different styles so that helps. We figure out an overall theme then run with it.
Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?
Midnite Sleaze: We listen to lots of live sets and radio shows (like BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix). We also listen to lots of mix cd's (new and old) and everything that gets sent to us on promo or by artists signing to our label. Lately lots of UK stuff from the likes of Nic Fanciulli, Eats Everything, Maya Jane Coles, Dusky & Franky Rizardo. There are also some of those classic DJ's whose radio shows we listen to often like Carl Cox, John Digweed, Pete Tong and Roger Sanchez.
Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?
Midnite Sleaze: Every second week! Haha. The industry can take its toll sometimes. It's very fickle. There is a lot of pressure (Mainly that we put on ourselves). But then you just have to remember why we got into it… we love the music!
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Midnite Sleaze: We are DJ's first and foremost. That is what we do. That's the fun part. The production stemmed from that for us. Although now it seems like we spend a lot more time preparing and working in the studio than in clubs. The gigs are the payoff and why we work so hard for those few hours on stage!
Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Midnite Sleaze: We were both always interested in dance music. It starts out as a nerdy hobby. We both collected records. We were very much influenced by our surroundings growing up in Melbourne (Being the dance music capital of Australia) and by things that were happening at the time. The inception of the major Dance music festivals, the early days of Kiss FM and community dance radio and the touring DJ's who began attending our shores regularly.
Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?
Midnite Sleaze: The main challenge is trying to balance the pressure that the industry ie clubs, promoters and punters put on you (directly or indirectly), whilst trying to maintain artistic integrity.
Question: What's a typical day like, for you?
Midnite Sleaze: Work, Studio, Bed
Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
Midnite Sleaze: Having a creative outlet and performing the music you create.
Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
Midnite Sleaze: Someone we respect and can learn from. There are too many to name!
Question: Do you have a website fans can visit?
Midnite Sleaze:
www.midnitesleaze.com there are links to all our pages there including Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud and our Tumblr blog.
