My Sauce Good Orphan Spirit Interview

Sydney's Continental stylists My Sauce Good are releasing a new EP called 'Orphan Spirit'. The feature track, -Orphan Spirit', has a bouncy 1960's surf-rock groove and sexy French female vocals. Think Tarantino soundtracks, Francoise Hardy, early B-52s.

Recorded at Defwolf studios Redfern, produced by Dirk Kruithof (Waiting for Guinness) and Aaron J Trew (Zombie Ghost Train). Each track has its unique flavour: -Walk-a-mile-blues' is a soulful traveller's blues ballad with a cinematic road-movie / Tom Waits feel that was inspired by the band's tour of Europe. -Wake the World' is a kooky psychedelic pop-rock apocalyptic love song with shades of the 90's sound (Beck etc). -Orphan Spirit Joshua Isaac Dance Remix' finishes off the EP with vocal cut-ups in fine dance-party mode.

The band is also proud to be releasing a beautifully animated video clip of -Orphan Spirit': a collaboration between the band, Jumaadi - 2013 Moscow biennale featured artist / shadow-puppeteer and Sarah Eddowes - animator / director. It is the perfect 3.5 minute pop-song length full of drama and beauty about a little girl and a trapped spirit. Complete with English subtitles. Youtube link: http://youtu.be/qL1osDJVQQU

Interview with Laura Brozky

Question: How would you describe your EP, 'Orphan Spirit'?

Laura Brozky: The feature track, -Orphan Spirit', has a bouncy 1960's surf-rock groove and sexy French female vocals. Think Tarantino soundtracks, Francoise Hardy, early B-52s.

Each track has its unique flavour: -Walk-a-mile-blues' is a soulful traveler's blues ballad with a cinematic road-movie / Tom Waits feel that was inspired by the band's tour of Europe. -Wake the World' is a kooky psychedelic pop-rock apocalyptic love song with shades of the 90's sound (Beck etc). -Orphan Spirit Joshua Isaac Dance Remix' finishes off the EP with vocal cut-ups in fine dance-party mode.

Question: Can you talk us through the recording process of Orphan Spirit?

Laura Brozky: We did it quite quickly, recorded with Matt Clarke at - Defwolf, in Redfern. We got to hang out with our fabulous co-producer Aaron J Trew and drummer Ivan Jordan for a day, play music and eat some great Vietnamese food and Croissants from Cockatoo bakery. Dirk Kruithof and I went in for another day to get a few more ideas down which we ended up using. 'Orphan Spirit" was mixed by Dave Hammer at Defwolf. 'Walk-a-mile Blues" and 'Wake the World" were mixed by Bob Scott. Joshua Isaac dance remix was mixed by Sir Isaac himself.

Question: What was the main motivation behind the EP?

Laura Brozky: Getting orchids from Dirk's mum's garden, chocolates, kisses….. and… sharing our new sounds with our community. Oh.. I almost forgot the best bit, we got to collaborate with the amazing animator Sarah Eddowes on our video clip of Orphan Spirit: http://youtu.be/qL1osDJVQQU

Question: What should audiences expect from a My Sauce Good show?

Laura Brozky: Interesting shoes, stories and languages with energising music.

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Laura Brozky: Dirk and I write the songs, we try to do it together when possible. I tend to get inspired by past experiences that come back to haunt my thoughts. I also use my dreams as a trigger of inspiration.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Laura Brozky: Joan as policewoman; Beck; On the Stoop

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Laura Brozky: We'll be taking our Orphan Spirit EP on tour!

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Laura Brozky: Why would I? I collect fluffy towels and besides I love all the emotions involved on the ride.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Laura Brozky: I love them both for their own magic.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Laura Brozky: When I was in my teens I was obsessed with Billie Holiday and Tom Waits.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Laura Brozky: Setting aside the time to create new material and having to say no to dinner parties.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Laura Brozky: Lately I've been working day and night at getting our new EP Orphan Spirit out there with lots of phone calls, emails, radio interviews and negotiations. I try and squeeze in a yoga class or a swim, a coffee break at my local and a catch–up with a friend.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Laura Brozky: The adrenaline I get from the unpredictable emotions involved- especially when an abstract concept takes flight and gets released as a song.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Laura Brozky: Nick Cave, Joan as policewoman and Caetano Veloso.

Question: Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Laura Brozky: Water
Wine
Wit
Waits
World Wide Web

Question: What is the story behind the band's name?

Laura Brozky: The name was cooked up during a meal at BBQ King. It was inspired by MSG E621. MSG is an acronym we like to use for the band.
