What was your first job? I worked in a Chinese-Malaysian Takeaway.
What inspired you to choose this particular career? I fell into IT by accident. I started as a receptionist for a property development company and then took a job as a secretary for a database software developer. I learned so much while I was there. I enjoyed the ever-changing environment. I always had an interest in computers, they fascinated me and I always found it easy to learn new software.
What qualifications/experience are needed to work in this field? Computer skills are essential. A willingness to learn new programs and not be afraid of computers, which so many people are. You have to be able to think fast and learn to adapt to change as the industry is changing every day. For my role in particular, general office skills and common sense. It's a lot of on the job training. With every job I've had I have learned something new. Everyone has a different way of doing things so you learn a variety of skills.
What are the best aspects about your job? The interesting and encouraging people I've met and worked with along the way and the changing environment. It's never boring.
What are the worst aspects? I wouldn't want to frighten you!
How many years' experience do you have in this field? Eight years.
Are there many employment opportunities? There are but you have to look for them. You have to know what area of IT you're interested in. Whether it be software, hardware, Internet or systems. You have to be confident in your job, as there is little room for error.
What makes you angry (at work or anytime)?
Liars.
What are you passionate about? I love to read. I'll read just about anything. I love books.
Your favourite place in the world, and why? Where I grew up. I have so many happy childhood memories. I always feel relaxed and peaceful when I go back there. I love sleeping in my old bedroom and waking up to birdsong and the smell of the sea air.
What is your idea of the perfect day? Relaxing on a beach with a good book.
Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life (that you believe)? Supportive family and friends, the ability to follow your heart, patience, dedication and belief in yourself.
