Interview with Ollie Roland

Question: How would you describe your music?

Ollie Roland: American at heart, with an Australian voice, and the body of everything far and beyond in between.

In more specific words, Australian New Age Music, Hip-Hop.

Question: Can you tell us about your latest single?

Ollie Roland: My latest single 'Kickin' In', featuring my bro Squad (TPE/The Pharmacist), cranks. Have you heard it?! If not, you should go and listen ASAP! I can say is it is a fast tempo'd, upbeat, and playful tones will let you relax and enjoy the indulgences of what ever it may be. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Question: What inspired the single?

Ollie Roland: The beat inspired the making of the song. It had a fun template to it. I then just took what I have been exploring further, lyrically, and had fun with it. I got Squad to jump on it as I knew he would fit the vibe. As soon as he said he was ready it was go time!

Question: Is there a particular message you hope listeners take from your music?

Ollie Roland: Make music for yourself!

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Ollie Roland: I love performing, though I haven't been able to do so lately! But recording is my therapy, writing beats is my cardio, and exploring different genres are my mental sessions, practicing instruments is my strength training and so on…

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

Ollie Roland: An unreleased song named 'Scandal' is my favourite by far! I wrote when I got back from Italy in January, with strong content throughout. I can't wait to show everyone!

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Ollie Roland: All my dead friends and family!

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Ollie Roland: People who have come before me, whether it be artist inspirations or good people I've lost tend to drive me the most. That could be family or friends too. Relationship issues, for good or for bad. Or just a general state of mind is often enough inspiration too.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Ollie Roland: Locally in Australia would be my guys Phi11a and Lanstan from Sydney, check them out! Abroad, right now, would be Uzi's releases, they were really great. Atlanta and Chicago music. Oh, and The Pharmacist, from DC, just dropped 'The Refill'. A lot of great DMV Artists.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Ollie Roland: After years of doing things I didn't really love, and some events that led me here, I chose to continue doing what I love until I die. My family and everyone around me keep me going, without them I couldn't.

That, and growing up watching the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, gave me inspiration.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Ollie Roland: Locally I would love to work with Gotye, Kylie Minogue, and Kevin Parker. I'd also love to sit down with Kanye West and Martin Scorsese.

Question: How did it feel to hear your song played all over the airwaves?

Ollie Roland: When I first heard my music played on international radio I got shocked and a lot of excitement. It gave me a lot of inspiration. When I get plugged in on FBI locally, from Tommy, it's equally as amazing. I've got a lot of respect for Tommy and everyone at FBI in Sydney, thank you!

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Ollie Roland: I'm not sure about anyone else, but in the times we are in, I think the biggest challenge is feeling like you have done enough. What type of measurement you take to say, "I've come this far" and look back to where you once were. I guess what the measurement of success it is that you lay on yourself, and where you can say, "I'm happy with what I have done."

Question: What's a typical day like?

Ollie Roland: A typical good day would be, waking up earlyish. Then going and getting some exercise done, nothing too intense. Breakfast, the best meal of the day, then straight into the studio. That could lead into the night or end early depending on the mood of the session!

A typical bad day would include, waking up with a sore back and missing all of the good things in the morning. I still like to get to the studio, whether at home here or at my second home Kiln Studios in St Peters.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Ollie Roland: Exploring everything it takes to become one! I was never good at drawing.

Question: What's next, for you?

Ollie Roland: Right now, along with the world, I'm at a stand still for travel and most likely 'visual' content. But I'm still writing and recording, and the EP is just the beginning of what's on the roster. Once the world starts spinning again I will get on a plane and perform!

Question: Can you share your socials?

Ollie Roland: OllieRoland.com is the home page. You can follow me on IG @prodbyollie and on Twitter @OllieRoland rappers get at me if you need beats. My music is on all platforms too!
