BIOGRAPHY

"The most important lesson I've learned in this business is how to say no. I have said no to a lot of temptations, and I am glad I did."

- Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born April 28, 1974, in Madrid, Spain.

Brought up with her brother Eduardo and sister Monica, she was always into the arts, especially dance. It was her love of dance, however, that lead her to ditch her high school education to become educated at the National Conservatory in Madrid, majoring in classical ballet.

With 4 years of Theatre training from Cristina Rota's School in New York, 10 years of classical ballet training and 3 years of Spanish ballet training, Penelope was ready to use her experience on camera.
Penelope Cruz has a long list of film she has appeared in, but if you don't like subtitles then you probably haven't seen them.

Her big Spanish break came when she was 17, cast in Jamon, Jamon (Ham, Ham in English) and Belle Epoque.

Her portrayal in Belle Epoque won her nine Spanish Oscars and the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

Cruz has been well known in Spain for more than ten years, but only recently has the sexy actress splashed into the mainstream film industry. After starring in many Spanish films, North America was finally acquainted with the Spanish star after her role in the English film, The Hi-Lo Country, in 1998. Extremely active in social causes, Penelope donated all her earnings from The Hi-Lo Country to Mother Teresa's charity.

After that there was another hit Twice Upon A Yesterday.

In 1999, Penelope was in the critically acclaimed Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother). Premiering at Cannes, the film received rave reviews and took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

Her most recent films include; Woman on Top, All The Pretty Horses, co-starring Matt Damon (she has become a vegetarian since filming this movie), Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

After having been linked to co-stars Matt Damon and Nicolas Cage, Penelope is now involved with her Vanilla Sky co-star, Tom Cruise.
