Skin revealed to be our biggest beauty concern above teeth and hair.
According to a new survey, when people look in the mirror the main thing they worry about is the condition of their skin.
The survey of 1,000 Australians commissioned by Australia's No.1 Acne brand Proactiv®, found that over a quarter (26% of respondents) identified skin as their biggest concern - above teeth (25%), and hair (24%). In fact, when asked how often they think about their concerns, over half admitted to worrying at least once a day, while two per cent said it even kept them awake at night!
The beauty concerns do not stop there. Of the 86% of people who admit to having pimples, a further one in ten (10%) said that if they had a pimple on their face they would reschedule social engagements. Another 18% would be embarrassed to speak in front of others.
Our fascination with having clear skin also applies in the digital world. Over a third of people questioned would rather forego Facebook for a week than see themselves on You Tube with acne. Surprisingly, men were more concerned about this than women with 44% of men aged 18-40 years old agreeing with this statement.
For women, shopping was lower on the agenda than clear skin with 28% preferring to miss the sales than go on a date with a spot on their nose.
From a regional perspective, people based in WA were most concerned about their skin, while people in SA were less concerned, claiming teeth was a bigger worry.
Proactiv's Brand Manager, Susan Leahy, believes our vanity fascination is no real surprise. "Our physical appearance is a major part of how we present ourselves to the world, so it is natural that people feel self-conscious about their skin and would be embarrassed by a breakout of pimples.
"At Proactiv, our goal is to educate people about taking a long-term approach to skincare to help maintain fresher, clearer looking skin and help prevent future breakouts from occurring."
A new cosmetic version of Proactiv, created by leading US dermatologists Drs. Katie Rodan M.D. and Kathy Fields M.D., is now available in Australia. NEW Proactiv is now faster and gentler*.
