Question: What inspired you to make a Halloween version of the Buddies?
Robert Vince: I had begun to look around to see what Halloween movies there were out there for family and kids and I couldn't really find anything and I thought that was a good indication that we should make something, for that time of year. I enjoy Halloween a lot, I love seeing the costumes and I like seeing kids who enjoy dressing up and having a spooky time!
Halloween is a very fun time of year, Christmas is a very fun time of year too but it has more values than Halloween. Spooky Buddies is a fun-filled movie and it is really great to create a ride that scares the kids a little bit but at the same time is very funny. I think families will enjoy Spooky Buddies, especially before Halloween.
Question: What do the Buddies get up to in Spooky Buddies?
Robert Vince: The Buddies have to solve a mystery and help a ghost by the name of Pip get back into his puppy body and they have to avoid a warlock, named Warwick the Warlock who has come back 75 years later.
Question: Can you talk about the casting of the film?
Robert Vince: I see certain characters when I am writing the scripts, because I write them as well, and firstly it's visual in terms of what do I want the character to look like, for example the Warlock - Harland Williams is perfect, he was my first choice when I started looking and right away I knew he would fit visually. Secondly, I like comedic actors, you'll notice our movies, of course, have a lot of comedy in them and therefore those actors are who I gravitate towards. I tend to go for comedic actors more than I go for period dramatic actors, for most of the movies we make. There are people I love to work with; you'll see there is reoccurring people in our movies that means I like the way that they work. Of course there are new actors every movie.
When it comes to casting for kids it, I look for the child that has the particular personality traits of the character. It is very hard for kids to be anyone but themselves.
Question: How do you manage the difficulties involved in working with dogs?
Robert Vince: I take very little credit for that, Mark Forbes leads the company that handles that and they are so spectacular at their job. I think I torture them sometimes by asking them to figure out how solve problems with dogs and situations that are fun. I really shouldn't take any credit for that because I invent the world and the situation and they make it all work.
Question: Do you have a favourite Buddies character?
Robert Vince: They're all my favourite characters; the one that is most like me is Mudbud. I always say "if you ask any kid, which of the Buddies is most like them, they will tell you" (laughing). I am most like Mudbud, really.
