Roxette Arisa interview

Beauty and fashion expert, wildly successful Japanese-American YouTube / Social Media guru Roxette Arisa is making a name for herself in the skincare, beauty, and fashion space with over 75 MILLION views and 1.2 MILLION subs on YouTube alone. Whether she is giving tips on how to perfect your makeup for mask-wearing, providing how-to-tips for taking that lust worthy passport photo, comparing designer and drugstore brands with a split face tutorial, or giving how-to-style basics by using clothes you already have in your closet, Arisa is a quickly rising star who is highly respected for her expertise in the beauty and fashion world.

Arisa's rise in the beauty and fashion world is quite different from her contemporaries. Growing up in Culver City, California she always knew from a young age what she wanted to be: an Olympic figure skating medalist. She began skating at the age of 4, training and practicing to perfection. By the age of 15 she moved to Detroit where she was selected for the Jr. National Team as part of a duo ice dancing partnership. Arisa then moved to Canada, where she was being groomed to compete internationally for Canada and in 2016, at 17 years old, she and her partner placed Silver at sectionals solidifying her stance as a competitor. But soon after, her world was rocked when her partner suddenly retired, and in 2017 she found her dreams of competing in the 2018 Olympics in Pyeong Chang all but a fleeting dream. The reality was that it would be near impossible to find a new skilled partner in time. But Arisa had found another passion.

Since a young age she had worn makeup for skating competitions and as she got older, she realized that she had found an appreciation for applying and learning new makeup techniques. She often trained in skating for 8+ hours a day, but at night she would spend her time watching makeup tutorials online and she decided to create a YouTube page herself.  To her, makeup was something that always gave her confidence and she wanted to share her advice with others. Before long, her following and views began skyrocketing and she realized that when one door closes another one opens. She decided to retire from skating and instead focus on her new passion - the beauty and fashion world. She packed up her bags and moved back home to Los Angeles. Around this time, brands began to take notice. In only a couple years, Arisa has quickly become a favorite for beauty and fashion brands alike, and has become a beauty ambassador to Smashbox, e.l.f., partnered with brands like Revolve, Olay, Murad, NARS, Maybelline, MAC, Instagram, Clarisonic, Neutrogena, Kate Somerville, CeraVe, IPSY, L'Oreal, Lorac and created her own collections for Milani and SIGMA to name a few.

Interview with Roxette Arisa

Are there different types of makeup that suit sport (like ice-skating) ?

Roxette Arisa: Yes definitely! For ice skating I always wanted to go with matte, long lasting, sweat resistant foundation and concealer. Smashbox Cosmetics Studio Skin 24 Hour Full Coverage Foundation and the new Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Concealers are great options if I'm looking for products that are long wearing and won't get shiny throughout the day. Waterproof mascara is also a must for any sport so I don't end up with mascara in places I don't want it!

What trends do you foresee for the next season?

Roxette Arisa: As far as fashion - knit everything is in! I've been seeing so many brands come out with knitted matching sets - either shorts and a top, pants and a top or even a one piece - that are so cute!

For makeup, I'm all about the 90s and I can see that being big for fall. Matte skin, smokey eyes and 90s nude on the lips.

Can you share with us the best way to colour match skin to foundation?

Roxette Arisa: You want to look at the veins in your wrist. If your veins look blue, you're most likely cool-toned. If your veins appear green, you're most likely warm-toned. If you have a mix of both, you're neutral! Most foundations are labeled cool, warm or neutral so definitely look for that! You also always want to match your foundation to your neck and shoulders so that everything matches once you've glammed up!

What does your bare-essential make-up kit look like?

Roxette Arisa: Concealer, peachy cream blush, lip balm and a little brow pencil!

Roxette Arisa: Can you share with us your favourite makeup tips to achieve a natural look?

Cream products are my favorite for natural makeup. I love blending them into my skin with my fingertips - this is the best way to make them look super skin-like. Cream blush and cream highlight are my must-haves for any natural look!

Why does diverse representation matters within the beauty world?

Roxette Arisa: When I was growing up, there wasn't a lot of diversity in mainstream media. I found myself wishing I looked like all of the "America's Sweetheart" celebrities at the time which were all beautiful in their own right - but as a little girl I wish I had an Asian-American idol to look up to so that I wouldn't have felt like "I didn't fit the mold" or "I could never be an actress or model because I don't look like one". Not only in the beauty world, but in all industries, diverse representation is extremely important because we need an equal playing field for every single person, skin color and ethnicity. Specifically speaking about the beauty world now - we need to hold brands accountable for shade ranges. Even a couple years ago there was so much inequality. Brands produced minimal amounts of shades - and a lot of times only shades that would make a reasonable amount of profit - leading so many of us to feel like we couldn't find products that match our skin color. We all deserve equality, empowerment and confidence and we all deserve to have products that fit us.

What's next for you?

Roxette Arisa: I'm going to be continuing to expand my social media channels and I have a couple big projects coming next year that I'm super excited about and can't wait to share with my audience.
