Sydney Film Festival today announced Screen Day Out, an exciting new program for high school students, funded by a group of Sydney Film Festival's generous philanthropists and supported by Australian Teachers of Media Inc.
Screen Day Out is Sydney Film Festival's secondary education program, presenting Australian premiere features and documentaries in three cinemas across Sydney – Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace Cremorne, Randwick's Ritz Cinema and Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre – between Thursday 7 and Tuesday 19 June 2018.
The 2018 Screen Day Out program includes: The Breadwinner, an Oscar-nominated animated feature set in Afghanistan; Speak Up, a celebration of the art of public speaking from France; Inventing Tomorrow, about science students tackling global environmental problems; and Pick of the Litter, a documentary following the tricky process of training guide dogs for the blind.
• All Screen Day Out sessions will be introduced by filmmakers or special guests, and after the screening students will have the opportunity to ask questions.
• In-depth ATOM Study Guides have been created for each film and will be available for teachers to download from The Education Shop at theeducationshop.com.au/2018-sydney-film-festival
• With the support of ATOM, the Festival has launched a competition for aspiring film writers, celebrating insightful film criticism in memory of film writer and former SFF director Sylvia Lawson. Students are encouraged to submit a review of one of the Screen Day Out films to win 12 double film passes courtesy of Event Cinemas and a Flexipass 10 for the 66th Sydney Film Festival.
