Herzog gained unprecedented access to the remote Chauvet Cave in southern France, where as recently at 1994 cave paintings believed to be some 32,000 years old were discovered. Herzog's accomplished use of 3D brings the contours of the caves into relief in a way that is startling and unexpectedly affecting.
