Shorelines New Heights Interview

Brisbane has unearthed a promising and exciting new band that is set to change the way pop-punk is delivered, featuring dual vocalists and armed with a fierce new EP. Introducing Shorelines – a four-piece that heralds from Brisbane and formed in the wake of the demise of pop-punks finest former risers, Call The Shots and Rum, Forest, Rum.

Shorelines, featuring Harry White (Lead vocals and bass guitar) and Dylan Thompson (Lead vocals and rhythm guitar) – former members of Call The Shots – and Sean Fisher (Lead guitar) and Shaman Grayson (Drums) – former members of Rum, Forest Rum, start a new chapter in Brisbane's music scene and hope to quickly pave their way to the forefront of their genre.

With influences including All Time Low, State Champs, Neck Deep and The Story So Far, the band have debuted their brand new EP titled 'New Heights".

The single 'New Heights" is a song about one chapter closing and the start of new beginnings. A fitting song for a band well in its youth. 'I wrote this song about my old band breaking up and having to start again with Shorelines," says Harry. 'New Heights definitely shows off our positivity towards the new band, but also displays some anger towards people that brought us down in the past."

The 'New Heights" EP sets the bar high for their future releases and throws them straight into the depths of the pop/punk scene. With catchy melodies, relatable lyrics and elaborate instrumentals, this release proves to be something completely unique and exciting for the genre.

The band released a first taste of the EP in January with the release of 'Let Us Go" which garnered over 11,000 views and 162 shares which is a mean feat for a band that formed only two months earlier.

After Call The Shots demise in May 2016 – a band that toured alongside the likes of With Confidence, You Me At Six, Tonight Alive, Short Stack, The Getaway Plan, The Story So Far, Mest, The Wonder Years, As It Is – Harry and Dylan decided to start writing and jamming together. What started as a jam quickly turned serious when Sean and Shaman, both from Rum, Forest, Rum, were added to the mix forming the four piece lineup they are today.

'The "New Heights" EP was actually written before Sean and Shaman joined us," says Harry. 'Most of it is about our experiences after Call The Shots ended but 'New Heights" is aimed at starting again and doing things the right way. 'Brighter Day" is a song based on negative feelings and depression, 'Let Us Go" is aimed at confusingly difficult times in relationships, and 'Back Home" covers long distance relationships whether it be between a couple or family members".

Interview with Shorelines

Question: How would you describe your music?

Harry White: Relatable, truthful and energetic. All of our songs tell a story about someone or something. We definitely have a unique style of writing where we try to include aspects of rock, pop and punk into our songs to make them different.

Question: What inspired the New Heights EP?

Harry White: The songs kind of just happened to be honest. I brought my ideas to Dylan before we even had a band and we decided to see how they went with the whole dual-vocalist idea. We ended up really enjoying how it all felt and sounded so we recorded the songs we had and found Shaman and Sean to fill our line-up, then we released the EP as a whole band!

Question: Can you tell us about the motivation behind the New Heights song?

Harry White: I wrote this song about my old band breaking up and having to start again with Shorelines. New Heights definitely shows off our positivity towards the new band, but also displays some anger towards people that brought us down in the past. It was written to be a fun song though, something we can all jump around to on stage.

Question: What was it like filming the New Heights music video?

Dylan Thompson: It was such a great experience to begin with. There is something about being on a music video set that just makes me so happy! We split up the shoots over two days, so on the first day we filmed all of the cut scenes which was really laid back and a lot of fun. The second day we filmed all of the performance side of the video, and I can tell you that 12 hours of filming and jumping around like crazy really takes it out of you. But totally worth it in the end!

Question: What should we expect from the EP Launch?

Sean Fisher: We have a killer lineup of fresh pop punk talent from both Brisbane and Sydney who are all looking forward to showing us what they've got both onstage and off stage! What is a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than jumping around to some pop punk music with your friends?

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Harry White: We do actually write all of our own songs. So far I have written a majority of most of our tracks, but now we are starting to come together as a full band much more to finalise things and put our own touches on each part. Everyone always has ideas to bring to the table though, which is really awesome!

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Shaman Grayson: Some of my favourite bands to listen to when I'm not playing our music would have to be, State Champs, Neck Deep, Hands Like Houses, Trophy Eyes and All Time Low.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Dylan Thompson: I'm going to say performing live, every time. Studio time can sometimes be very stressful with long and repetitive days. But when It comes to performing live, I can get up on stage and completely lose myself for an hour and have the best time of my life.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Sean Fisher: I've been playing guitar since before I can remember, music has always been a part of all our lives. There is no better feeling than performing and having people singing alone to the lyrics in songs that you've written yourself. That alone is big impish inspiration! Other than that, watching Green Day's Bullet in a Bible was what make me want to be in a band.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Shaman Grayson: My typical day is usually full of filming, band practice, work and playing with my cats.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Harry White: I love everything about it (except how much everything costs)! There are a lot of difficult and time consuming tasks that we have to do constantly, but they make the band interesting and help us to become a better team. We have loads of drive to succeed together which is important, and all of us constantly push each other to work harder and harder to get to where we want to be as a group.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Dylan Thompson: I would LOVE us to collaborate with With Confidence. They are such a talented and easy going bunch of dudes. I know between the two of us, we would create pure fire.

Question: What is the story behind the band's name?

Dylan Thompson: Coming up with a band name was one of the hardest things Harry and I have ever done with this band. When we were recording our New Heights EP, we basically told ourselves that we would not leave the studio until we came up with a band name. We had some horrible names in mind, so I am stoked we settled for Shorelines
