Sienna Wild You Wouldn't Know Interview

Indie Rockers On The Rise

Indie rockers on the rise, Melbourne's Sienna Wild have announced their exhilarating, gritty new single You Wouldn't Know, a track that places the listener in a strange and unsettling situation between two lovers, out now. The group have also released a killer lyric video to accompany the track. To celebrate all things You Wouldn't Know, Sienna Wild is heading out on a national tour in January 2020, kicking off at Frankie's Pizza in Sydney on January 2, then moving through Adelaide, Brisbane, and wrapping up with a hometown show in Melbourne at The Tote on January 31.

For fans of Catfish and the Bottlemen, Eskimo Joe and Arctic Monkeys, You Wouldn't Know is an absolute firecracker of a song. Soaring guitars reign, while searing, affecting vocals ride atop the arrangement with strength and power. You Wouldn't Know is pretty much everything a modern rock fan could want in a track, and is guaranteed to get you pushing your way through the dancefloor to bust a move. Speaking on the interesting inspiration behind the track, bass guitarist and vocalist Louis Goutos enthuses, "The sentiment behind the single came from me setting myself a challenge of writing from the perspective of a third party in a break up. Up to that point, our writing had been about power within a relationship, whether it be during good times or bad. This time, I wanted to write a song about an outsider who becomes involved in a break up, as opposed to the two protagonists telling the story. It is essentially about a girl telling her boyfriend's best friend she's going to leave her man, but the boyfriend is too oblivious to realise. Hence, he 'wouldn't know', but the friend does!"

Sienna Wild are thrilled to be taking You Wouldn't Know on the road, and it's pretty clear why once you hit play on this track – it's definitely one for a hot, sweaty, summer gig. Giving fans a taste of what to expect from their 2020 tour, Louis says, "Fans can expect a tight rock performance full of swirling guitars, crashing choruses and compelling dynamics. You'll see a band who have conviction and believe what they say, and mean what they do. A good time for all!"

As fans of music from the very beginning, Sienna Wild are a passionate group of young musicians who are excited to share this stunning new track with the world. Reflecting on the formation of Sienna Wild, Louis says, "Fortunately, I came from a musical family and there were always instruments around so I just started playing things and learning by listening. I started off with the piano, then the drums, until finally the bass called, and that was when I found my voice (so to speak). I found like-minded musicians and spirits in the guys from Sienna Wild, and haven't looked back ever since. Also none of us are opposed to a few beers and a good time… I reckon listeners should get around Sienna Wild now, before someone else gets there first! You might just be the one to say 'I told you so'"

Sienna Wild is Louis Goutos (bass and vocals), Jonathan Giokas (lead guitar) Lewis Ciavarella (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) and Lucas Manitta (drums).

Interview with Sienna Wild

Question: How would you describe your music?

Sienna Wild: Our music is music for the soul. Music to play in your car and on your stereo, to give to your friends and keep from your enemies. Guitar driven indie-rock for people who know how to feel and to love.

Question: Can you tell us about You Wouldn't Know?

Sienna Wild: You Wouldn't Know is a song written from the perspective of a third party that gets caught up in affairs of the heart. Basically it is an emotional song, driven by dynamic guitars and musicality that tells the story of a guy who needs to keep the secret of his best friend's girl leaving him, and his best friend isn't treating her right but is too oblivious to admit it.

Question: What should we expect from your upcoming tour?

Sienna Wild: Expect a tight and polished rock performance. We are really excited to play our new songs, new single and some old stuff as well. We have been working hard on giving our audience the best of us, a band full of conviction and belief in what we do.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Sienna Wild: Both really, for very different reasons. We always loved playing live and we were always a strong live band, looking for ways to give the best show we could. Lately, our live sound has evolved and grown to reflect our growth as songwriters, as players and as people really.

Since working with Oscar Dawson on our last EP we have really fallen in love with the writing and recording process in the studio, pushing our limits in terms of what we can create as a four piece and adding atmosphere and feeling to our music. We really feel like we have the best of both worlds and approach them with the same amount of energy and excitement.

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

Sienna Wild: At the moment I'd have to say "You Wouldn't Know". Our audiences seem to really respond to the energy of it and the dynamic shifts. It's full of intricate guitar playing and rhythmic patterns too so it's a hard one to nail and creates the perfect amount of tension on stage. We always love playing new stuff too and seeing how it the crowd reacts.

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Sienna Wild: I'd probably have to say Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys, if I had to choose. I would love to have him watch us play and listen to our song writing and share with us his thoughts. To me he is a modern rock genius, phenomenal musician and lyricist so I'd love to pick his brains about the whole writing process in general and how we can improve.

Question: What is the story behind the band name?

Sienna Wild: It's interesting, this story has grown and evolved into its own Chinese whisper. Basically, we were throwing around some names and I always loved the colour burnt sienna, a darkish red. We liked the two words together and added others to make it 3 words, and Wild stuck, so we kept it and got rid of burnt.

Question: How did the band come together?

Sienna Wild: Jon and I were in high school together and have been playing and writing ever since. We really did grow up playing together and went through our musical journey together. We met Lewis playing his own acoustic set and immediately asked him to join the band, and he brought along his mate Lucas and suddenly, the earth parted, the heavens opened up and here we are.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Sienna Wild: Well, it would be simple to say current state of mind and emotions, but its true. Recently, our writing has been about music first, setting the tone and the energy level and then finding melodies through guitars and vocals. We love changing it up and starting from a different point and place each time. Brings about totally different sound results, and it's fun to keep it interesting. But at the end of the day it comes down to how we feel and what we wanna say, that must be what drives the song. If you don't feel it, how will anybody else feel it?

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Sienna Wild: Right now we are listening to a lot of different stuff. Mostly the great songwriters from the late 70's and early 80's English New-Wave movement like Simple Minds, Pretenders, Elvis Costello, The Smiths, Pete Weller, etc. I think it is good to listen to stuff you haven't touched in a while, or at all, and let it wash over you. You never know what you can absorb and use in your own writing.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Sienna Wild: I'd have to say my family, and that goes for all the guys in the band. We grew up either in a musical household or with lovers of music around us and it has really had an immediate impact on our playing and listening. When there are instruments around the house and The Beatles are always blaring, you can't help it. It sticks to the walls and inside of your mind.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Sienna Wild: I'd have to say Paul McCartney. He is the ultimate musical icon to us. Singer, song writer, pioneer, innovator and pure genius. We'd hopefully bring something to the table once we picked ourselves up off the floor.
