Nicola Schultz combines her strong vocals with the impeccable guitar work of Mickey Levis (Troy Horse Studios co-founder) and natural violin and sitar of Nicolas Lyon (Xavier Rudd Band).
Question: How did it feel to hear your song played all over the airwaves?
Nicola Schultz: I have had some airplay, and I recall it was a great feeling, it was acknowledgment.
Question: Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?
Nicola Schultz: I was all -carpe diem' when I was younger and knew nothing about -the music industry'. Now I have learnt through experience about -the music industry', and believe so much is changing, and we are heading in a positive direction, where new possibilities are abundant. It's up to your own imagination how to get your music out there.
Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?
Nicola Schultz: Yes I write my own songs. The inspiration comes from people and experiences they have had and ones I personally have.
I often mix the various inspirations together in one song.
Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?
Nicola Schultz: Lately I've been enjoying French music compilations, some jazz, some classical and eclectic music, and particular artists have been Gotye, Ben Lee, Angus & Julia Stone .
Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?
Nicola Schultz: I am focusing on doing some live shows later in the year and will see where this takes me. I'm also planning to do more recording next year as I have written songs for a new album.
Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?
Nicola Schultz: No, there were moments where it was difficult and external circumstances weren't exactly supporting the musical path, but this is what I love to do, and I've learnt that I will do it wherever life takes me.
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Nicola Schultz: I love recording. Live performance takes a different mindset which is interesting as you just have to get on with it. There is adrenalin in the live experience, which is fun
Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Nicola Schultz: It wasn't exactly a conscious decision, but the unconscious inspiration is probably Peggy Lee, David Bowie, and bands I used to go and watch like The Clouds, The Falling Joys, Straitjacket Fits.
Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?
Nicola Schultz: Believing in myself.
Question: What's a typical day like?
Nicola Schultz: I work with 3-5 year old children during the week, and before and after this I focus on the music business as an independent artist, and pick up the guitar and sing and work on songs.
Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
Nicola Schultz: The recording process, collaborating and seeing an idea evolve and become concrete in the external world.
