The Bali Plastic Tour

The Bali Plastic Tour

Bali, Indonesia: The Bali Plastic Tour - A challenge to clean up Bali's over-polluted beaches and help the local and visiting communities to change their plastic habits is kicking off on December 1st! However they need to fundraise at least $5000 USD to go ahead with the project! Their fundraising page can be found here.

The Ocean Mimic Foundation, a charity founded by two British girls, Emma Sparrow and Chelsea Clements, organises beach clean-ups in the Canggu area of Bali – an area that has seen increased popularity with travellers in recent years.

During just one clean-up last December, 40 volunteers picked up a colossal 640 kilos of trash from a single beach in Canggu in one hour. December is the worst month for trash on Bali's beaches. "We expect to pick up between 5 - 10 tonnes during the month" says Emma. "People want to help and it's so desperately needed," Emma explains.

Indonesia is currently the second largest global contributor to ocean plastic pollution. In December monsoon season hits full force and 9 months worth of accumulated trash inland will be washed down Bali's many rivers and waterways onto the beaches and into the surrounding ocean. "We were devastated witnessing this first-hand when we initially arrived in Bali and desperately wanted to create something that could make a real difference" says Chelsea.

One year later and with the deluge of plastic trash that monsoon brings, Ocean Mimic is planning to clean all the way around Bali with one cleanup every day in a different location. They are inviting local schools, villages, hotels and businesses to join to raise awareness and educate about the issue.

Ocean Mimic now have cleanups happening all over the world which they share through their Facebook Page and Instagram. Emma and Chelsea empower their followers to ditch their plastic habits with helpful tips and tricks. They will be documenting the whole month through their socials.

"Anyone can join the Mimic Movement through our social media channels and we will help guide you towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Or if you're in Bali, please join one of the clean-ups on the tour," Emma says.

Ocean Mimic is a one-of-a-kind clean-up community and worldwide movement dedicated to rid the world of its plastic habit.
