Climbing Dreams and Shadows: An Ode to Hope and Disillusionment in Ladder To The Moon
The Burbs Return with Heartfelt New Single

Get ready to be captivated by The Burbs, the Surf Coast rock sensation that's making waves with their latest release, Ladder To The Moon. Formed in 2016 amidst the vibrant Surf Coast/Geelong rock scene, The Burbs quickly gained a reputation for their electrifying sold-out shows and East Coast tours. Known for their unique blend of pop melodies and dark lyrics, they effortlessly evoke a nostalgic vibe that resonates both sonically and visually.

2024 has been a monumental year for The Burbs, marked by the release of their 12-track demo album, Sunlight Spills Across The Swimming Pool. Now, they are buzzing with excitement as they drop their new single, Ladder To The Moon. This heartfelt soft-rock ballad, with its metaphoric lyrics about loss, features stunning Pink Floyd-esque guitars and Beatles-like keys. The record kicks off with a vocal sample followed by an acoustic guitar progression that sets the stage. The first chorus hooks listeners with echoes of classic rock, Britpop, and folk. As the track progresses, a psychedelic indie rock vibe with touches of indie folk takes hold, leading into a musical interlude rich with vocal harmonies and sweet chords. The final chorus seamlessly transitions into an outro, creating an enticing conclusion that leaves listeners wanting more.

The Burbs are set to return to the stage this year, with new dates to be announced soon. Stay tuned and get ready to experience the magic of Ladder To The Moon live! Ladder To The Moon is out now

Interview with The Burbs

How would you describe your music?
Happy-go-lucky melodic short pop songs which often have a heavy edge and underlying themes of trauma and things, even the happy-sounding songs are usually a facetious spin on a painful topic.

Can you tell us about your new song, what was the inspiration?
Yeah, with Ladder To The Moon, I'd just had a friend pass away and had to get some words out. It was nostalgic about our time spent together as well as reflecting on not getting to say goodbye properly. Its this simple five chord song but the band brought it to life in a way that was interesting enough to take to the studio.

What are you musical influences?
I like pop songs, thats what i listen to and that's what comes out. Danny's into electronic stuff and hip hop and sometimes like the Dandy Warhols and The Strokes and this leans us into a lot of simplified drums and the parts he writes always seem to click with what the rest of the band is trying to do. Peri's got these alt-country-rock influences going on... Julia Jacklin, Carla Geneve sorta stuff. We all listen to heaps of genres, and we narrow it down and have debates about whether this would be a Burbs thing to do or not.

Do you prefer performing live or recording?

They bounce off each other. Being in the studio, its where our creativity gets to bloom. Playing shows is like throwing a party, you let your hair down... which is hard to beat.

What should we expect from your upcoming shows?
Yeah good question. We've always had mixed reviews but the next shows will likely have an audience that ensure a good time and a performance that we'll try and make sound more like music and less like chaos... we can't make any promises. And we're planning to showcase some exceptional musical talent in the lineups... we're starting a movement to get great music exposed again.

What motivates you most when writing music?
There's always an inner urge to create. The void of real music boiling to the surface these days, we just wanna fill it.

Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
Ash, Primal Scream, Dinosaur Beard, The Posies, Single Twin, Bluebottle Kiss, Rival Schools, Militarie Gun, Flop, Superdrag....

What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Elliott Smith's New Moon record and Sonic Energy.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
Select All - one of the best bands in our scene. Split EP?

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the music industry?
You spend your life trying to be an artist, musician, songwriter... nurturing your sensitive side, and then when you come to the point where it feels necessary to get paid for your music at some sort of okay level to allow you to continue focusing full-time on it, and there's this feeling that the direction you've sent yourself in is an opposing personality type to what you need to make this happen.

What's next, for you?
Ladder To The Moon comes out this month, accompanied by a music video that's made up of footage from past tours and shows. We'll announce a 30 Nov 2024 Melbourne show soon. There's more new music coming too and we might drop a mini doco to go with it. We're in a release-and-see-what-happens mode at the mome with a lot of songs still to take to the studio and we'll do as much of that as we can until we get slowed down.
